Studio shut down but process running in the background

I shut down Studio 10 minutes ago, but the process is still running in the background. The process is using 13% of my CPU, which means it has been hogging one of my 8 threads for 10 minutes, i.e. as much CPU power as as single-thread process can get.

I have mentioned this before, but no one from SDL has commented on it. It looks like another Studio bug.

I am going to kill the process now, as I cannot move the files for the project until the process terminates.

I would, however, like to know whether it is safe to kill the process. I have repaired Studio after killing the process like this in the past. Is a repair necessary, or can I continue using Studio without a repair?

I am running Studio 2017, with the latest updates applied.

Hi Bruce,

I don't think this is a common bug and I have no idea what is causing this problem for you. I guess you'll only know if a repair is necessary after you try it!

Rarely I kill Studio, the same as I kill any other application that from time to time causes me a problem like this.

Did you run a batch task or some process that is perhaps unfinished?

Hi Paul,

It may happen more than you think. I generally don't notice it unless I want to move the Studio files for a project. The Studio process keeps them locked until it terminates. I end up killing the process if I lose my patience.

Watch the Studio process in the Task Manager the next time you shut down Studio. The window closes immediately, but on my previous computer running windows 7 and Studio 2015 or 2017, the Studio process continued in the background. Sometimes for a short period of time, sometimes for a long period of time. The same thing happens on my new computer running windows 10.

Dragon also sometimes appears to have trouble when Studio hangs like this. (Studio hangs regardless of whether Dragon is running.)

Hi Bruce,

Ok... will test it later.

On the moving files thing. If you remove the project from the Projects View first does it still cause a problem? I do this a lot and have never noticed this problem you describe. So I view the project folder from Studio to get to the right place and then remove it from Studio. At that point I can do whatever I like with the files and Studio doesn't care.

Hi Paul,

As was discussed in a previous thread, Studio frequently has a problem shutting down when there are no longer any projects showing in the project view. It instead displays an error message and refuses to close down.

As a result, I have gotten out of the habit of removing projects in project view. It was forcing me to kill the Studio process too often.

I now just shut down Studio and move the files.

Do you know whether this bug has been fixed?

Hi Bruce,

Interesting stuff you come out with Bruce... I've never come across this particular issue. I must live a sheltered life ;-) However, I tested it just now by removing all my projects, closing Studio and restarting. No errors... just have to add them all back again and foolishly forgot to backup my projects.xml first!!

Hi Paul,

As I mentioned, it is "frequently" a problem. And I am not the first person to mention this problem in the Studio forums.

But in the grand scheme of things it is just an inconvenience ...

Studio continuing to run in the background is also an inconvenience. And I have also mentioned this before in Studio forums. Again, the process does not *always* continue running for a long period of time in the background. It does so frequently enough to be an inconvenience.

But I am not pushing anyone for an answer.

I just thought I would ask whether anyone knows what it is doing when it hangs in the background like this and whether killing the process is likely to scramble any files.

If no one has noticed this behavior, then I will just continue killing and repairing when I have to move project files and the Studio process is taking too long to terminate.

Thanks for the screenshot Bruce. I note you have customised your view here. What happens if you reset the windows layout instead of whatever else you do? And if you reset the windows layout and then repeat the exercise do you still have a problem?

Hi Paul,

Good question. I opened up Studio again, but of course it is now closing without any error message when there are no projects in the project list.

If this happens again, I can try resetting Studio back to its original settings.

Can I do this by moving or renaming the files located at "C:\Users\asaplang\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0"? (I see 4 xml files there.) Do these files contain all of the Studio settings?

If I rename the default project template, will Studio copy the original default template from "C:\Users\asaplang\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0\UserProfiles\Builtin"? (This appears to be a Studio stash of the original project templates.)

I will try it next time.

I was actually thinking about another problem I have been having (i.e. the amazing disappearing Symbols section of the Advanced ribbon), but I never got around to asking you how to temporarily reset Studio's settings before.

Would saving those 4 xml files and the default project template reset Studio to its default settings? Or is it more complicated?

Here you are referring to renaming the 14.0.0.0 folder to reset Studio:

c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0

To reset these you need to rename either the folder here:

c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2017\Project Templates\

Or rename individual templates if you don't wish to reset them all.

When you restart Studio the xml files will be recreated as default and the project templates will be recreated from the location you mention.

Hi Paul,

Studio once again displayed an error message when I tried to exit the program with an empty project list.

I reset the window layout as you suggested (View -> Reset Window Layout), but Studio continues to display the same error message and refuses to close.

This is, however, just a side issue. The original question was why Studio continues to run in the background when the Studio window is closed.

Could you do me a favour Paul, to satisfy my curiosity? Could you start the Task Manager and Studio, open up a project, preferably something large if you have it, and then watch to see whether the Studio process terminates when you close the Studio window?

The incident that inspired my original question was quite extreme. It looked like the Studio process was stuck in a loop and would not terminate, even though the window closed right away. Normally the process terminates quickly when the window is closed. If not, it generally terminates within a minute or two.

Then we can put this thread to bed.

Hi Bruce,

Just my 2 cents here, but from what it looks like, these problems are being triggered by a certain sequence of operations.
From what it looks like, the issue is with the "Projects" view only and this happens when closing down.
As a workaround, here is what I would do:

Every time right before you close Studio, I would click on the "Welcome" view (or maybe a few of the others) and then click back to another view.
This should ensure Studio does not try to reference an old view again and perhaps let Studio close down properly?
