Trados omitting sentences from text

This is a quite nifty problem, which I haven't been able to solve on my own. That's why I'm writing about it here.

In a nutshell: Trados is omitting sentences. This means: I get a text in Trados' Editor, work on it, and when I generate the target, I detect sentences in it that are still in the source language - meaning that I have to translate them "manually", outside of Trados without the benefit of saving them to my TMs.

A little background: the customer said they're using some kind of new template, and the problem started to appear right after that. The template has, arguably, been developed by a third party, so not much more is known about it.

The only file type that works with those texts is the Microsoft Word 2007-2016 (file type identifier WordprocessingML v. 2). I'm using Trados 2017 version 14.0.5821.4.

Note that, at first glance, the sentences being omitted have something to do with footnotes. The strange thing is that even if there is a sentence omitted which contains footnotes, those footnotes are still there in Trados, even if the text to which they belong isn't.

I add 3 files to experiment with (all with the agreement from the customer):

  1. source: Missing sentences example text.docx
  2. target: Missing sentences example text - result.docx (omitted sentences highlighted in yellow)
  3. XLIFF: TRA-DOC-ET-CONCL-C-0206-2016-201701283-02D00.docx.sdlxliff

I hope someone from SDL will be able to provide me with an explanation why this problem persists.

Thanks in advance

Margus

  • Hi Margus,

This seems to be related to the same control boxes you had before. The entire file is inside these control boxes. I tested this in a few other tools and they could not save target at all so clearly whatever your client is doing to construct these files it's a little out of the ordinary. I also tried to isolate the problem to only the affected boxes but this didn't work at all... everything was translated correctly in this case.

So I'll share this with the support team so they can investigate and escalate to development as needed.

    Thanks for sharing the file.

    Regards
