How can I import an DE->EN sdlxliff into a TM with the opposite language direction EN->DE in Trados Studio 2017?

I work for a customer for whom I usually translate in the direction EN->DE, So my TM has this direction.

Occasionally they send me something that needs to go the other way round, so DE->EN. I used ANYTM to reverse my TM, got the translation done by a native speaker and now I want to import this into my regular TM which has the direction EN->DE in order to leverage those translations as well.

  • Hi Paul,
    thanks for your help.
This sounds too good to be true.
If I wanted to use your first suggestion, I would use the TM created with AnyTM from now on in my project? So I would translate from EN to DE but have the TM created with the AnyTM option (which is a DE to EN TM) open for update?
And in a separate project I would do all the DE-EN translations and add that very same TM in the project settings?
In previous versions of Studio I have sometimes come across TMs from customers where the wrong languages appeared or reverse languages appeared in some segments. (I suspect this was caused by someone not paying attention during an import process.) But if you say this has been solved in 2017 that's a big leap forward.
The multifarious article was quite helpful. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Hi Ursula,

If you don't ever care about the variants and just want one TM for everything, also reverse direction, then just use AnyTM for your work and that's it. It will create a reverse direction TM in the background the first time and thereafter keep them updated so it doesn't matter what variant of language direction you work with.

If the variants are important then I'd recommend you set up a couple of project templates as I did in this article:

    multifarious.filkin.com/.../

That way you have the best of both worlds.

    Regards

Just to clarify on this part.  The TM is not created with AnyTM, you just select your normal TM with AnyTM and that's it.  So if you set up your defaults to always select the same AnyTM then you don't need to do anything else.  Every time you open a file the right TM will be selected; any time you create a Project the right TM will be corrected.

    Make sense?
