How can I import an DE->EN sdlxliff into a TM with the opposite language direction EN->DE in Trados Studio 2017?

I work for a customer for whom I usually translate in the direction EN->DE, So my TM has this direction.

Occasionally they send me something that needs to go the other way round, so DE->EN. I used ANYTM to reverse my TM, got the translation done by a native speaker and now I want to import this into my regular TM which has the direction EN->DE in order to leverage those translations as well.

  • Hi ,

You don't actually have to do anything. First of all AnyTM will allow you to use the same TM to work in both directions, and secondly (even if you didn't use AnyTM) you can import a DE->EN sdlxliff into an EN->DE Translation Memory. Studio is smart enough to recognise the languages and put them into the right place.

Perhaps review this article on AnyTM:

The content is relevant although you don't need an app anymore as this is part of the product.

  • Hi Paul,
    thanks for your help.
This sounds too good to be true.
If I wanted to use your first suggestion, I would use the TM created with AnyTM from now on in my project? So I would translate from EN to DE but have the TM created with the AnyTM option (which is a DE to EN TM) open for update?
And in a separate project I would do all the DE-EN translations and add that very same TM in the project settings?
In previous versions of Studio I have sometimes come across TMs from customers where the wrong languages appeared or reverse languages appeared in some segments. (I suspect this was caused by someone not paying attention during an import process.) But if you say this has been solved in 2017 that's a big leap forward.
The multifarious article was quite helpful. Thanks for sharing this.
