TM display

Hi, I cannot understand why I sometimes receive in a project (SDL TRados 2017) the following display as to the TM used. Thi is is different from the usual displaying, where there is no 'project tree' but only the name of the TM. Indeed things work regularly during translation but I would like to understand why the are two different displaying ways. Thank you very much

  • Hi ,

It's because you have Project Translation Memories in here. This is a specific way to create a Project so that a TM is created that contains only the relevant matches from your Main TM, related to the values you set up in your Project Settings. Useful for people who don't wish to share a Main TM with their colleagues and because it's a lot smaller, and because it can be used in a controlled workflow where you don't wish to pollute your Main TM with unchecked TUs until the very end of the project.

    Regards

  • Thank you. The fact is that I didn't do anything different from other projects where this particular configuration doesn't appear. That is I didn't use any specific way to create this kind of project settings and in this specific case I have nothing against sharing my main TM with my colleagues. So please what can I do (or not to do) not to incur again in this type of Project creation? thank you
  • Hi ,

Best thing is make sure you always use the correct batch task when creating your projects. Maybe you inadvertently selected "create with project translation memories". Easily done I think.

  • I thank you both (Paul and Alison). So, as I will always need a Project memory containing only the TUs of that job (as it will be delivered to the customer) and for each of those jobs (from the same client) a Main memory (I call this like that because it is the Main memory referred to a certain customer), but it is not the General Main memory (containing everything, if you mean 'this' when you say "Main menory") which is the correct task sequence I shuold use among "Prepare without project translations", "Analyze only" and "Prepare". Sorry but it is not still clear to me. And what do you mean by the 'batch task' "create with project translation memories" where is that "batch task" , and in which phase of the project preparation I should find it? I cannot see it among the settings used in the Project Preparation window and neither under Options. Thank you very much.
  • Hi Cristina,

To quote SDL Studio Help, "...batch tasks are the individual tasks which can be run on project files. You can run tasks individually or you can put several of them into a task sequence and run the sequence."

The second part of the last sentence above refers to the 'Batch tasks' that are selected as a sequence to be performed when creating a new project, as here:

'Prepare' is the Task Sequence that I think you need to achieve what you describe. You can select the memory/ies you want to use and then a project memory will be automatically created for each of them.

But the meaning of Batch tasks is wider than that... As in the first half of the last sentence I "quoted" above, you can run individual 'Batch tasks'...

You can access the individual 'Batch tasks' two ways in the Projects View, which is accessible via the buttons bottom left of your Studio screen:

The first way is to highlight the Project you want to perform a task on if it is listed in the Projects View then click on the Batch Tasks down arrow in the Home ribbon, as here:

    A dropdown menu appears:

The second way to access this dropdown menu of 'Batch tasks' is to right-click on the project you want to affect, in the Projects list (if it's not in the list, you can access it first via 'Open Project').

When you right-click on a project in the Projects view, a dropdown menu appears with a list of what you can do to that project. One of the items you can select here is 'Batch tasks' and then the list you see in the image above will appear.

For SDL's explanation of what 'Batch tasks' are, here is the English Help page that explains them all:

    SDL Help 'batch tasks'

It is also possible to perform each of the individual components of the batch tasks in other ways without using the dropdown, for example when a file is open but that is definitely too much information!

I hope the above helps you...

    All the best,

    Ali :)
