Use Trados Studio 2017 to proofread English Monolingual editable PDF?

I have a huge English PDF (editable) to proofread. I'm thinking the best way to do it is this:

Step 1.) Pull the text into Word 2007 (which is what I'm using - otherwise I could use the PDF editing functions in later versions of Word);

Step 2.) Apply proofreading tools and check;

Step 3.) Open a Trados Studio 2017 project - the PDF as a single file;

Step 4.) Copy source to target throughout, making changes where they're made in the Word document after Step 2;

Step 5.) Save Target As.

ONLY STEP 4. seems like a hassle. Does this seem like the best approach to you? Any other ideas? Any problems with this plan?

Tnanks in advance!

  • Hi John,

    Based on your steps I don't now why you need steps 3-5 at all?  You've already made the changes in Word so why bother with Studio?  If you're after the formatting in the PDF and would like to return a PDF then maybe do this:

    1. Open the PDF in Studio

    2. Close Studio

    3. You'll find a Word file in the same folder as the PDF. Do what you need on that.

    If you want to use Studios verification as well as you proofing tools in Word then maybe this:

    1. Open the PDF in Studio

    2. Copy source to target and save target file

    3. Proofread in Word

    4. Retrofit the proofread word file back into Studio

    5. Check, accept changes and save the target file

    Or something like that...

    Regards

  • Paul thanks!
    Wait, I want to understand this. With the first approach you suggest - I open the PDF in Studio, close studio, studio will have created a Word document? Didn't realize that. But fascinating! So I work on that - how does Studio know how to format the pdf properly when I reopen Studio to save the changed document to (pdf) target?
    For the second approach, step 2 is "Copy source to target and save target file". I was thinking about that, I hadn't checked, but you can Save Target to a format other than the original document format? I can Save Target what was a pdf to doc.x format? That would be very convenient.
    All very cool. The last bit - in a separate note...

    My bad... I had a different idea in my head at first, and then went the easier route.  If you do want to return a formatted PDF then maybe use InFix:

    This relates to the first observation you made.  Studio converts the PDF to DOCX and actually works on the DOCX.  So when you save target it is a DOCX.  You could save that to PDF from Word even... just depends how good a quality rendition of the original PDF you want.
