SDL Trados Studio has stopped working (2017)

I am getting this crash at least once per hour and I cannot link it to any specific action, other than that I tend to move around a lot between segments. Generally, I wonder if Studio might have a hard time processing translation results, concordance searches and term recognition. I have a decent system with 3.4GHz and 16GB RAM and around 50% memory use, Chrome taking up most of that. I run the most recent version of Studio.

Could someone tell me what basic troubleshooting steps I need to take?

Thanks!

  • Hi ,

Generally when you get problems like this the best things to try are the following:

    1. Disable your AV for a while and see if this resolves the issue - could be you had a virus update that caused a need to whitelist Studio
    2. Run a repair on Studio in the windows control panel
    3. Reset Studio

You can find the instructions for the last two here if you need them:

    gateway.sdl.com/.../communityknowledge

You'll also find a link to support at the end of the article so you can request help if none of these help.

    Regards

  • Hi Paul,

I followed the suggested steps in Workarounds 1 & 2. I excluded the sdl programs folder from Defender and renamed basesettings, plugincache and usersettings.

After I customized the new interface (arranging windows), Studio started crashing about every 10 mins. I repeated the process and made just a few custom kb shortcut settings and Studio was fine.  But as soon as I closed the Preview and Termbase Search tabs and then moved Term Recognition vertically to the far right (full vertical length) and the Termbase Viewer and Termbase Search with the Fragment Matches in the upper left, Studio crashed when I moved the cursor to another segment.

From my user perspective, it just seems that Studio does not like my lay-out or my moving around!

Is it possible for someone else to load my usersettings and see what it does? Or does that generally not work? I ended up re-enabling these original usersettings and as long as I am careful not to move around through segments and just go down, it crashed only once or twice again.

I assume that Workaround 3 (reset Studio to default settings) is nearly the same as reinstalling the software but without having to return a licence?

    Thanks.

Yes, if you save your user profile to an *.sdlprofile file through File -> Setup -> Manage User Profiles and then send me the file.  I can probably test with that and see whether this helps to reproduce the issue.

Nearly... a reinstall won't replace all your settings if they are already there.  This forces the regeneration of all the settings.

  • This is exactly the issue I have been encountering for the past few weeks. I have reinstalled all my three (!) plugins as suggested somewhere, changed the IE version (why is that not the default?) and Studio 2017 SP1 keeps crashing on me multiple times per day.
It is really time SDL solves this issue once and for all as it seems many more people are struggling with this.
I use Trados Studio for 95% of my work and my productivity is really going downhill because of this.
Apart from the crashing, I have had issues "running out of memory" after I had restarted following installation of Windows updates.
I am using Windows 7, 12 GB of RAM, SSD disks.
Another issue: starting up takes a long time, as does switching to project view. All in all, I lose up to an hour per day because of all these issues.
