Can't Save Translation! Aligned document finds no format to export to

I've just aligned a source Word doc. and its translation, also a Word doc.

Then I edited them.

Now I can't save a target - it doesn't seem to know that the source was a word doc.

"Failed to save target content. There is no original file type definition associated with this file."

Help!

  • Hi ,

It sounds to me as though you aligned and saved as an sdlxliff, then opened the sdlxliff and tried to save as target? I'm sure you wouldn't as it doesn't make a lot of sense, but I don't understand your workflow here.

If you aligned them then you already have the source and target so why try to save the target now?

If you edited the sdlxliff in the Studio editor and tried to save a new translation then this won't work because the sdlxliff was created through a completely different process and is not designed for saving target, rather it's designed to allow you to have more editing options (QA etc) before updating into a TM.

If you want a revised target then you need to update the contents of your alignment into a TM, then open the source in Studio, pretranslate it and then save target.

Hopefully I'm not completely misinterpreting what you're doing here?

    Regards

    Paul

  • Actually, you're right on target, and that's because I had two goals: I want to get these files into the project TM *and* I need to edit them. The point was to do both. Your solution is just right and easy - I've already aligned the first translation and edited it; now I'll just open the source and for translation and pretranslate the whole thing.
