Extremely slow performance of the Alignment function in Studio 2015

Hello,

I have been busy aligning in Studio 2015, and I keep experiencing extremely bad/slow performance in the alignment editor, especially when disconnecting and reconnecting segments. But even scrolling is slow. The bigger the files, the worse it gets.

My Studio version is SR3 12.3.5281.10

My computer is only a few months old and has very high specs, so that cannot be the issue. I have no problems whatsoever processing large files for translation, only for aligning.
Has anyone had similar issues? Any ideas what might cause this or how this can be solved?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Dietger

  • Hi ,

Have you tried tackling the alignment in a different way? Maybe disconnect all your segments to start with and then go through the document aligning only certain segments at intervals of 20 or 50 segments as appropriate. Then finally realign the entire file. This might be faster and if you are careful with your choices the realignment should be good. This article explains:

  • Hey Paul

Thanks for your reaction. Sadly, your suggestion is not really an option. The source files contain a few recurring sentences that are not present in the target, and that is causing incorrect alignments. And I cannot remove those from the source, since I cannot edit the source files.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestion, but that would be nothing more than a workaround. The problem still remains that Studio Align cannot handle larger files, which is very strange for a modern day program. In my case, they are Framemaker files that have been converted to .mif.
I never expected to start longing for WinAlign again, since that worked so much more fluently.
There are also other options that have dissappeared, and which make aligning much more difficult:

    - It is no longer possible to select and disconnect several segments in one go
    - You cannot split and merge segments as you used to
    - You cannot enlarge the font (honestly, on a 4K screen the mini letters are giving you a headache after staring at them for half an hour)
    - You cannot join more than three segments
    - There is no synchronised view like there was before

As a translator who regularly aligns projects (technical manuals with lots of tags) for a large outsourcer, I cannot help but conclude that the aligning program got so much worse than it's predecessor, and all of my translator colleagues seem to agree on that, as far as the aligning function is concerned :-(

    Kind regards
    Dietger
  • Hi Dietger,

Why not use WinAlign then? Scroll down a little in this article and it explains how to do this even if you only have Studio 2017 installed.
