Splitting a package created by someone ele

Hello! What is the best way to split a package that has been sent to me by my client? I need to send differnet files in the package to two different translators, so what I was going to do is import the package in my computer, send them the files and tm as "separates" and then import their sdlxliffs in my package TM. This way I would work inside the package and would be able to create a return package for the client. Is there a better way to do this? Thank you in advance.

    Why not go the easiest way?
    Receive the package as would you like to work on it yourself.
    Now go to the folder, where you extracted the package.
    You will find several subfolder there.
    Take the sdlxliff files from the target language folder and zip them according to the way you want to split the job. So this way you create a "files package" for your colleagues. Then go to the TM folder and zip the TMs there. If there is any term bases folder, do the same.
    Send the packaged files together with the TM files and other resources to each of the tranlators.
    They have to create own projects with exactly these files, use the resources given and translate the files.
    When ready, they need just to send you the translated files.
    You replace the files in your folder with the translated files. Then in Studio run the "Translation Count" batch. This way your Studio will now know, that the files are translated. You can then process the files as necessary and create the return package - exactly the same way, as would you have translated the files on your own.

    Thank you, Jerzy! But doing this would't corrupt the package? (I mean replacing the files in the package with the ones the translators will send me, I was thinking of doing the other things you suggested in the first place ;)). I'm scared of making the trados gods angry and corrupting tha package.

    If you take the files from the target folder and your translator will deliver you exactly these files, but translated - NO, it won't spoil anything. We're doing this since Studio exist.
    This is one of the biggest advantages of Studio as a file based system: it is the most flexible system I know.
    To be on the safe side: when you go for this option and your package should be damaged in any why (what I really doubt), you can simply remove it from the projects list in Studio (right click), then receive again in a separate folder. Then create an empty TM with the corresponding language pair and import the files from your translators there. Then use for pretranslation - but IMHO this is really worst case scenario and will be necessary only if any of you does really something wrong.

    A suggestion: Doing this way (sending just sdlxliff files + tm), if someone prepared the package with some specific setting (i.e. length verification, memory penalization or priority), you won't pass these settings to your translators. So pay attention to the project settings and tell them to replicate those settings.

    Fully correct.
    Nonetheless, my real life with packages shows, that the only settings PMs who work with us is tick nearly all options without any real intention behind. Is there any option to check? Ok, so let's tick it - seems to be a common policy among PMs. For example they check spacing around tags in files, which have NOT been prepared properly.
    So yes, package settings are important. But do not expect too much from an average PM in a German language agency.

    My experience is different, and I wish for our PMs translators to get good care for project settings.
