Do segments get saved to memory even if you have not performed a save on the document?

Question

The reason for my asking is as follows: I am working on a rather large document, over 100k words. When autosave runs it takes some time and so stops me working (I'm assuming the size of the document is what makes it take so long). I am thinking that I could change the time for autosave from, say 10 minutes, to an hour. If, for some reason, I have a crash I may not have saved the translation in the document but would my work be in the TM which I could then run through the text to recover it?

Every CONFIRMED segment is stored in the TM. UNCONFIRMED segments are NOT stored in TM. 
For huge documents set the autosave to 15 minutes. However, in Studio 2017 SR1 the autosave seems to have been moved to the background, so it does not disturb that much as it did in S2015 or early S2017...
