Shortcuts not working in Studio 2014

Hi,

I just had to buy a new computer and after installing Studio 2014 I noticed that the shortcuts are not working, even if they can be seen in the shortcut list. What could be the reason and what could I do to solve the issue?

Many thanks in advance!

  • Hi Katariina,

When you installed Studio, which profile did you choose? Trados or Default? If Default then your shortcuts should work. If Trados then you'll have shortcuts as they used to be with Trados 2007 ;-)

To check or change this, go to File>Setup>Manage user profiles:

If the current user profile isn't 'Default' then click 'Change user profile' and change it.

If this doesn't work or it is already set to 'Default', try going to File>Options>Keyboard Shortcuts then click 'Reset to Defaults'. If the installation process went wrong for some reason, this may sort things out.

Another possibility is to do a Windows repair on Studio. Shouldn't be necessary straight after installation but here's how:

    1. Close all SDL applications.
    2. Open the Control Panel:
      • Windows Vista/7Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Windows 8: Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
      • Windows 10: Right-click on Start > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features.
    3. Click/highlight SDL Trados Studio 2014 and click Repair on the top toolbar or in the dropdown if you right-click.
    4. Restart Studio.
If that doesn't work try a reset. You'll need to make hidden files and folders visible if they are not, here in the Windows Explorer Ribbon:

Then via Windows Explorer, navigate here:
    C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0

    Delete the following 3 files:
    BaseSettings.xml
    Plugincache.xml
    UserSettings.xml

Then open Studio. You will have to recustomise your settings. I know this is a pain but it's good to go through the settings and tweak them now and then to make sure you have it set up to the optimum for whatever you are doing. Also to be sure your Studio settings haven't been changed by an update.

I hope some of this helps!

    All the best,

    Alison

  • Thank you Alison,
Unfortunately none of these helped - I tried them all. I already had chosen the default user profile, but resetting to defaults didn't solve the issue. I also followed your instruction about deleting those 3 files under C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0, but that didn't help either. It would be very important for me to get these shortcuts working. Is there anything else I could try?

  • Are you using a computer or a Mac?
    Which shortcuts do not work?

  • I'm using Windows 10. The concordance search is one that doesn't work.
  • OK. So you copy source to target, select text and press F3? This will never work. What you do in this case is searching for source words or phrases on the TARGET side. Please use dedicated concordance search for source, not just "Concordance".

  • Hi Anna, hi Jerzy,

Thanks Jerzy but have I missed something? Has Katariina said she copied source to target? If not, I don't understand what you mean.

Anna, you could always try reinstalling...

    All the best,
    Ali
  • Hi Ali
This is the simplest explanation for a concordance shortcut, which seems not to be working. F3 toggles concordance search for this language, in which the cursor is placed. So if you copy source to target and then search for a selected phrase with F3, you are searching for source text on target side of TM and obviously do find nothing...
Otherwise I have no clue, why the concordance should not work, provided of course, that the project is properly configured.

  • Hi Jerzy,

Ah, OK, I understand you were suggesting what logically could cause F3 not to work.

I think Katariina is having problems with more than just the one shortcut. Would resetting the window layout make a difference, do you think?

Also, Katariina, are you sure that your keyboard is working OK? Do your shortcut keys work in other programs?

    All the best,

    Ali :)

  • Hi Alison and Jerzy,

Thanks for your efforts! I have used the source concordance search by selecting the term(s) in the source text and then pressing the F3 button. That's how it worked in my previous computer. I checked now, that in other programs the shortcuts work without problems. I'll now try reinstalling Studio....
