Big problem with little square numbers and letters appearing on the menus on the upper ribbon

Hello Paul,

I have a big problem with SDL trados both with 2017 and 2017SR1 edition.

While I am typing the text of the translated sentence in the target box suddenly in my toolbar (ribbon) a great numebr of little squares showing letters and numbers appear on the menu items.

I am sending you herewith a picture so that you can see what the situation looks like.

Appearently letters and numbers are connected to function of the button on which they appear.

They are quite annoying because they prevent me from typing any further untill I have clicked out or hit the return key. All this strongly slows down my translation productivity. I have tried anything to get rid of this annoying issue but with no success.

Can you please advise me or suggest me any special setting or particular solution to overcome this problem?

Have you ever seen anything like this before for other Trados users?

I thank you in advance for your great help.

Regards,

Paolo Sebastiani

  • Are you using the ALT key to enter such letters? ALT toggles the ribbon in Studio... The solution will be using a different keyboard layout.

  • Hi Jerzy,
No I am not using any ALT + Key. After translating the sentence I am just hitting either CTRL+ENTER or CTRL+ALT+ENTER in order to confirm the segmente and move to the next one. When you say that I should use a different Keyboard layout what exactly do you mean? I am translating vs German so my Keyboard is generally set to the German language. Is this a problem?
  • The only explanation for these small codes appearing on the ribbon is pressing the ALT key - either by purpose or incidentally.
If you are not using the ALT key and are not aware of pressing it, please check your keyboard. The German layout is not a problem at all, I'm using a German keyboard with German or Polish layout (PL 214) all the time since Studio exists.
I have had similar problem to yours, when I was using shortcuts with ALT, like ALT+Insert, but these have been resolved with SR1 for Studio 2017. So I really suppose your keyboard is damaged (mechanically or electronically). Check please using a different one.
