Anyone else slightly disappointed by the amount of errors/problems we encounter with Studio?

Hi everyone,

I'm curious to know if anyone else but me feels a bit disappointed by the number of problems Studio creates in our everyday work? I remember that, back when we were using Trados 7, we did encounter some errors but in my personal 15+ years experience, those errors did not occur every day.

In the last year alone (and keep in mind that I'm the head of a department, so in charge of ~8 different computers right now, i.e. 8 different Studio installations, plus the support I provide to our 30+ freelancers), I have lost at least 30 master Translation Memories (they give that error about Invalid translation units, among others...) containing millions of translation units and years of hard work, had major, work-stopping issues with several of projects (we get errors about everything, from unknown references to files, to anything, I'll put some of the errors I got this week alone at the bottom of this post), and lately Studio has decided to simply stop working and shut down, after the upgrade to SR1.

What I mean is that... it used to be a lot simpler to work with Trados. And, you could salvage your TMs by using txt files. Simple txt files. Now you have to have such technical knowledge to solve your problems that the everyday user is at a bad spot. Plus, I honestly can't stop our production every few hours because a Studio project or a Studio translation memory has died a another e-death... Am I doing something wrong here, or is the technology too new to be bug-free?

Sorry about the rant, but I trully am disappointed, especially today when another problem has presented itself and I now have to spend a considerable amount of time trying to figure out what the problem is, again.

I am posting here some of the errors I have received lately. The newest being (see the screenshot) that the sdlxliff file opens in the Editor and then the "Find," "Undo," "Redo," and copy-paste functions stop working entirely (shortcuts included).... See the screenshot, top right, the find button is gray.

I honestly love working with Trados tools, but my patience is running a bit thin here...

    Hi

Yes, I am.  In fact I know the development team generally are and would love to see a zero defect product (probably unlikely in reality but that's what we want to aim for).  Life would be easier for us and you if there were never any bugs.

The last update tried to make it more obvious for users y simplifying more messages, where possible (we know this could still be better), and by providing lins in the messages to the community and to the KB with an automatic search to try and point users in the right direction when they do see a bug.

The next update in Studio (due shortly) does contain some enhanced logging technology that will report errors back to the development teams so they can start looking at resolutions for them in a better way:

    1. Based on the most commonly occurring errors

    2. Before they are even reported through support or in the community

    3. Fixing things that may not throw up an error you can see but could be problematic later on

This is a more proactive approach and it's the first time we have done this and even though some people will just say we should have done this years ago I think it's another step in the right direction to trying to improve the overall stability of the product.  So once CU8 is released I would recommend everyone opt into the reporting mechanism because it's going to help us to improve the product for you.

  • I'm wondering if there would be any chance to have this reporting "module" as separate 'installer', so that one could plug it into an older build...
The point is that I somehow doubt that CU8 will contain all fixes which are essential for us here, so there will be serious reasons to NOT upgrade.

    Hi

It’s not just the tool, there are also code changes that actually send specific errors to improve diagnostics.  So there’s no value in using the tool without the corresponding code changes.  We won't be putting these code changes into 2015.

I guess it'll be unfortunate because we need people to be on 2017 to ensure it continually improves.  We can Beta until the cows come home, and we do a lot of Beta testing (incidentally, perhaps you'd like to be on this?), but once the products go live we always find things we missed.  Hopefully the approach we are taking now will support our ability to fix things faster and where it matters the most.

Understood. I though so (actually, I assisted with implementation of similar tracking in my previous job), but I asked just in case... ;-)

I know, and I'm not happy about the situation either. In fact I'm one of the early-adopters as I like to dig out maximum of every possible feature of the tools I use (I'm definitely not one of those using only 20% of the features 80% of the time).
But if new updates break old functionality, then I simply have to stick with version which works correctly and stable, so that I can fulfill my duties and deserve my salary ;-). I'm not paid for testing software... but if I get some interesting offer, who knows ;-)
