Hi, I'm a newcomer to SDL Trados Studio. I am curious to know if the program can convert an either a Word or an sdlxliff file to idml. I suspect that the answer is no. Could anyone please confirm this for me?

I'm a freelance translator and have been told by a client that it is possible for Trados SDL studio to convert a Word file into an IDML. I do not see how this could be possible. If it is, would someone please tell me how.

Thanking you in advance

  • Hi Raymond,

It sounds like your client may be confused about what Studio can do. The only file format conversion that can happen in Studio is when you input a PDF and get a Word file as a target. Other than that, whatever format you input is what you'll get as the target, with a SDLXLIFF file as the intermediate bilingual file format that is handled by Studio (in other words, if you input an IDML, for example, it will first get converted to an SDLXLIFF, which is where you'll do all the translation and editing work, and then when you generate the target it will be saved as an IDML again).
