Multiterm no longer working in Trados Studio 2014; causing it to crash

Hi,

I've been using Trados studio 2014 SP2 & Multiterm for quite a while now. Until recently virtually all of my translations were from source French Canada to target English Canada. More recently, I've also been translating from Source English Canada to target French Canada. I have done a couple of translations from source Spanish to either target English Canada or French Canada. I have only one termbase with +/-20,000 terms. I have an fr-CA_en-CA and an enCA-fr-CA termbase.

A few weeks ago, my termbases won't open in Trados, even though it shows up as enabled in my project settings. When I try to quick add entries to my termbase in trados, I get the message "Multiterm cannot add the entry". I can't get rid of the message so I have to exit Trados under Program manager.

So right now I can't use Multiterm in trados at all, which kind of defeats the purpose.

I tried to repair my termbase multiple times (never works; Multiterm always crashes).

I just uninstalled and reinstalled both Trados 2014 SP2 and Multiterm SP2, but that didn't fix anything.

Can someone please help me figure out how to get things working properly again?

thanks,

Rhonda

  • Hi ,

I don't really know what to suggest other than you carry out a reset. But first confirm you have these versions so you are up to date with compatible versions:

    SDL Trados Studio 2014 SP2 - 11.2.4435.12
    SDL MultiTerm 2014 SP2 - 11.2.1379.0

If you aren't then get up to date first and that process might help too. If you are already up to date then try the reset.

Rename this folder (just add _old to the end or something, it's not important what you rename it to) and restart Studio:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\11.0.0.0

So the path would become this:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\11.0.0.0_old

If you can't find this folder then you need to unhide your hidden files/folders:

    www.howtogeek.com/.../

You may also have to do a MultiTerm reset and it might help. Rename this folder (just add _old to the end or something, it's not important what you rename it to) and restart MultiTerm:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL MultiTerm\MultiTerm11

  • Hi Paul, I followed your instructions but it didn't work. I have the right versions of Trados and Multiterm and did the resets as you instructed but I still get the same problem. Termbase won't work in Studio. Termbase won't open and when I tried to quick save terms, I get the same error message "Multiterm is unable to add the entry." I saved the error message details if there's a way for me to send them to you.

The only other thing I can think of is that I recently started using Google Backup and Sync. Could this be affecting things in some way?

Another thing I've noticed is that when I look at program settings, my termbase is enabled as the default, but the project languages are English Canada first and French Canada second, even though English is the target and French is the source. Is this a potential problem?

And another possibility: I've tried removing my termbase and re-adding it just to see what would happen. When I do that, I get the message: The default termbase has been changed so the languages have been changed. Check that the new languages are correct. They are, but not in the correct order (English first, French second).

    Any ideas?

  • Hi ,

Are your termbases local or in a remote location like googledrive or dropbox perhaps? Are they on an external drive? If any of these applies try moving them locally and see if the same problem occurs.

Another idea would be to try deleting all the index files from the termbase. So all files apart from the *.sdltb itself. This would be these :

    *.mdf
    *.mtf

See if that helps. If not see if you can use the Glossary Converter perhaps to export your terms to a MultiTerm XML/XDT and then try recreating your termbase and importing the terms back in again. Perhaps a recreation of the termbase will help.

The order of the languages in your last question doesn't matter. What matters is you are able to select a language for each one.

  • Hi Paul - I'm following up a few days later to say that the problem is back :(. I searched for files with the .mdf and .mtf extensions on my computer and found a bunch more. I deleted them but the Termbase widget in Trados is still not working.

Does Trados create these files every time I translate a file? Will I have to go and manually delete them on a daily (or more frequent) basis?

I've noticed that the problem seems to occur after I switch from my FR CA - ENG CA TM (which I use 90% of the time) to my ENG-CA - FR CA TM (which I only use 10% of the time).

    Any other thoughts or suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,
    Rhonda
  • Hi Paul,

So your suggestion did the trick - thanks. However, at some point or another during the day when using Trados, I inevitably get the error message "Multiterm cannot add the entry". I can't get rid of the message so I have to exit Trados under Program manager. It's not the end of the world, but definitely not ideal.

Since I'm deleting .mdf and .mtf files from my computer to get Trados back up and running again, I'm guessing they aren't essential. Is there any way to stop them from being created in the first place so I don't have to go through this process on a daily basis? (Or would this cause more trouble)?
  • Hi ,

You can delete them, but they will always be recreated because they are needed. Are you using the latest versions for 2014?

    SDL Trados Studio 2014 SP2 - 11.2.4435.12
    SDL MultiTerm 2014 SP2 - 11.2.1379.0

Maybe this could be a problem.... just guessing really. Perhaps make sure that your security software is completely ok with Multiterm by ensuring it's properly whitelisted... still guessing.
