The process cannot access the file ... because it is being used by another process!

SDL Trados Studio 2017 SR1 - 14.1.6413.8
During the past 2 weeks, when trying to open files for translation I often get the message:

The process cannot access the file ... because it is being used by another process

If I try a few times, it eventually opens

If I try and open multiple files (say 10) at a time I always get the message.

The issue does not go away after shutting Studio, it does not go away after reboot/shutdown, and it happens on all projects from many different customers

Had the same issue in Studio 2019 Pro, plus company's security settings didn't allow me to tune the antivirus, so I tried one thing and the other, then just started the project with one file and subsequently…

Hi Jonathan Addess ,

Try disabling your antivirus and see if this helps. If it does you probably need to whitelist Studio.

Hi Jonathan,

I see this occasionally, and when it comes up, closing the Windows Explorer folder where the file is stored always solves the problem for me.

This is most definitely not the cause of the problem as:
1. The folder where the original file resides is closed
2. The report is on a temp file in a hidden folder

Turning off the my antivirus (AVG free) solves the problem, however whitelisting refers to a firewall and I do not have AVG firewall so I need a better solution - (I have been using Studio with AVG for many years with no issues up till now)

Whitelisting in this context has nothing to do with firewall. It's about telling the antivirus to exclude certain applications (e.g. Studio) and/or folders (e.g. the one where you keep your projects, and/or the Studio's own subfolder in TEMP/TMP) from its activities.
Alternatively, you can tell your antivirus to not be so paranoid and leave alone certain file types (if such option exists in the particular application).

Hi Jonathan,

See here were you can change this configuration in Avast:

Open Avast's user interface and go to Configurations▸ General. Scroll down and click on Exclusions to expand this section.

Select the appropriate tab depending on what kind of exclusion you want to add. In this case select "File Path":

File path: insert the file location or folder manually in the text box or click on "Browse" and add the following path to Exclude SDL Trados Studio: C:\Program files (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio5.

Click OK to confirm.

This should solve the problem.

Are you sure?! Did you check that it helps?
I don't think that excluding Studio's APPLICATION FOLDER will have any influence on locking files in TEMPORARY FOLDER (as can be seen in the error in original post).

In fact I'm not sure this is a good way - Studio creates own temp folders with random names in the TEMP folder, i.e. it's impossible to create sensible exclusion. And excluding the entire TEMP folder is not a good idea as this the very place where malware drops its temporary executables/scripts/etc.

The point is that there is no universal recipe... it always depends on multiple factors, the main one being WHY is the file locked by the antimalware... which is basically impossible to tell if you are not the programmer of the actual antimalware.
It could(!) help if you whitelist the actual Studio executable... if by doing this the particular antimalware excludes ALSO FILES created by that executable... which is not something what can be told universally.

Definitely, excluding the entire TEMP folder is bad and short-sighted idea.
Not mentioning that telling the users to exclude "this particular folder" is also wrong... the TEMP and TMP folder locations and names can be redefined in the OS and the folders may be located somewhere else and be named completely differently.

I tried on my laptop - same version of AVG, slightly older version of Studio and there is no problem (as I mentioned, there has not been a problem for the past 5 years). This seems to be an issue with the latest update to Studio and not with AVG :-(
