Trados export problem - hidden texts appear

Hi all,

We have a problem with hidden texts when exporting a Word file (.doc). The customer has hidden some parts of the document, so they won't get translated. The original Word file looks like this:

When the formatting and hidden texts are shown, it looks like this (hidden text is underlined with ....):

However, after export the file looks like this:

So the "2." (it's part of an automatic numbered list) appears in the exported file, even though it should be hidden. We then marked it as hidden again and sent the document to our customer. Then they said that the "2." was visible again when they opened the document.

We didn't change any of the tags in Trados and when I look at the segments with the "show all content" option they look exactly the same.

We work with Trados 2015 and 2017 and the problem appears with both tools.

Does anyone have an idea how to avoid this problem?

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,

Sara

  • I use hidden text VERY often to prepare various kinds of Word files and hever had seen such problem.
Are you sure that the automatically numbered part is ALSO set as as hidden? It looks like if it actually wasn't... and that only the following text was hidden...
Best way to investigate what's going on is to extract the "document.xml" from the DOCX file and examine the corresponding part of the XML (I strongly recommend to pretty-print the content using XML Tools plugin for Notepad++... or any other favorite XML pretty-printing tool)

EDIT: I see that you actually mention DOC format, not DOCX... that could also be the problem... it's handled by different file type which behaves differently.

EDIT 2: Looking closer at your second picture I also see that the style of the "2." autonumbering is different from the style of "1."... this could also be the problem...

  • Hi Evzen,
Thank you for your reply. The numbered part is definitely hidden in the original file, the whole part is not shown in the document (as it is an automatically numbered list, apparently the underlining dots that normally indicate hidden texts are not shown).
You are right, the "2." is a little bit more to the right. This is odd because they both are formatted with the same style.
