SOLVED: Trados 2017 "Failed to add window command bar exceptions" - Instructions does not help

I cannot open Trados.

I have tried

  1. gateway.sdl.com/.../communityknowledge for both Trados and MultiTerm
  2. removing projects.xml

No help, cannot work.

Kind regards,

  • Hi ,

Just noting that Ali dooesn't work for SDL... she just likes helping other translators :-) On updating the help with importing the profile... I'm not sure that's a good idea since you may have backed up the very problem resetting the user files resolves. Reimporting may introduce the problem again.

The repair probably didn't work because it doesn't do a reset of the user files.

  • Hi , hi ,

Paul's right, I do like helping other translators. It's not just because it's nice to help, it's also really good for reinforcing one's own knowledge whether it's 'going back to basics' or tackling some obscure issue that really makes you think outside the box - especially when you get to my age and your brain cells have started dying off...!

Paul's right of course ... but then one can always perform the reset again, this time without importing the profile settings... worth a try? Or even get those settings back by deleting the new settings files and reinstating the old ones that you've renamed...

However, I never export my settings because I like to go through them periodically because, for example, with each update a new or improved setting or two may appear, and I can reinforce my knowledge and/or improve the settings by going through them. Also, tweaking the settings for particular scenarios can be very useful. Though if this happens regularly, one can export those settings for use as and when. You really have to know the settings well for that though...

said that the option wasn't available. This raises a question - this is the second time recently I've seen someone who can't get to the Windows Repair process. The first was saying that after the latest big Windows update, the UI had changed such that the usual instructions didn't work for them. Which is why I added 'find Control panel by typing it into the search box next to the Windows button'.

Where a user's UI differs from those described in the Help instructions (out of date or not), with a bit of lateral thinking they can still be followed but not all users are able to do that...

Another reason why this Community is so great, we can cover all the angles.

    All the best,

    Ali

  • Hi again !

I've just noticed that you say the repair didn't work... so my last paragraph is maybe not valid in your case... I was quoting what you said in your first reply to me...

Either way, have a great day!

    Ali :)

I was able to import user settings without a problem. I suspect the issue roots in plugin settings. So, removing user settings may be an overkill, and maybe is should be a last resort in deleting settings.

I have configured the keyboard settings heavily. I don't really want to go through them periodically :)

But a good thing that I learned from this exercise is that it is possible to export/import settings. Maybe I will save time in future installations/migrations! Every cloud has a silver lining :)
