  • Hi ,

make sure your versions of Studio and MultiTerm are up to date. To do this, if you have automatic updates set, just open each of them and accept any update offered. If you don't have automatic updates, set, go to Help > Check for Updates. It's important to have the most recent version of each of them.

    Then, take a look here:

Repairing your installation of SDL Trados Studio

A Windows Repair periodically is helpful with any heavy-duty software, especially after a Windows update.

If these suggestions don't help, as you have already tried reinstalling, you can get free help with licensing and installation issues that are preventing you from working, pretty fast:

    Fill in the form here:

    installation and licensing help

Select 'installation' from the 'Case type' dropdown and give your correct email address so that they can contact you.

    Hope this helps!

    All the best,

    Alison

  • Hi ,

Perhaps also try reset in addition towhat Ali mentioned. The error would seem to be more likely related to the user files than anything else. Rename this folder (just add _old to the end or something, it's not important what you rename it to) and restart Studio:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0

So the path would become this:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0_old

If you can't find this folder then you need to unhide your hidden files/folders:

    www.howtogeek.com/.../

    Hi Alison and Paul,

    Thank you for quick response!

    1. Repair workaround 1 (Windows Repair) was not possible, as that option was not available.
    2. However, repair workaround 2 (deleting settings) did the trick!

    (gateway.sdl.com/.../communityknowledge

Unfortunately, the price was that I lost all my configuration I did. I just bought and installed SDL Trados Studio 2017 Pro two days ago, and if I need to nuke my config every two days, it's hard to call productivity.

I regret buying 2017, 2015 worked so well!

In any case, I can continue my work now! Thank you so much.

  • Hi ,

Yaaay! Very glad to hear that there was a solution that worked for you.

Sorry to hear that you're finding 2017 problematic.

It should always be possible to run a Windows Repair. Maybe there was an extra/different click required somewhere (at the 'Small icons' step?) to get you via Control Panel to the right screen. It depends on how your UI is set up. You can find Control panel by typing it into the search box next to the Windows button bottom left of your screen.

Should you have to delete settings files again, you can first save your user profile settings via File > Setup > Manage User profiles > Export...

Then when you've finished deleting the setting files you can use the same path to import your profile settings.

I didn't realise this wasn't explained on the help site, would have indicated it myself otherwise.

    All the best,

    Ali

PS I've been using 2017 since before it was publicly launched and I LOVE it but the new features did take some getting used to - best to turn them off if you're not using them.

Great! Maybe update the help page?

As for the repair - maybe it didn't work, as I had already reinstalled, and the installation was untouched in that sense.

I appreciate your help very much - thank you!

  • Hi ,

Just noting that Ali dooesn't work for SDL... she just likes helping other translators :-) On updating the help with importing the profile... I'm not sure that's a good idea since you may have backed up the very problem resetting the user files resolves. Reimporting may introduce the problem again.

The repair probably didn't work because it doesn't do a reset of the user files.

  • Hi , hi ,

Paul's right, I do like helping other translators. It's not just because it's nice to help, it's also really good for reinforcing one's own knowledge whether it's 'going back to basics' or tackling some obscure issue that really makes you think outside the box - especially when you get to my age and your brain cells have started dying off...!

Paul's right of course ... but then one can always perform the reset again, this time without importing the profile settings... worth a try? Or even get those settings back by deleting the new settings files and reinstating the old ones that you've renamed...

However, I never export my settings because I like to go through them periodically because, for example, with each update a new or improved setting or two may appear, and I can reinforce my knowledge and/or improve the settings by going through them. Also, tweaking the settings for particular scenarios can be very useful. Though if this happens regularly, one can export those settings for use as and when. You really have to know the settings well for that though...

said that the option wasn't available. This raises a question - this is the second time recently I've seen someone who can't get to the Windows Repair process. The first was saying that after the latest big Windows update, the UI had changed such that the usual instructions didn't work for them. Which is why I added 'find Control panel by typing it into the search box next to the Windows button'.

Where a user's UI differs from those described in the Help instructions (out of date or not), with a bit of lateral thinking they can still be followed but not all users are able to do that...

Another reason why this Community is so great, we can cover all the angles.

    All the best,

    Ali

  • Hi again !

I've just noticed that you say the repair didn't work... so my last paragraph is maybe not valid in your case... I was quoting what you said in your first reply to me...

Either way, have a great day!

    Ali :)

  • ”On updating the help with importing the profile... I'm not sure that's a good idea since you may have backed up the very problem resetting the user files resolves. Reimporting may introduce the problem again.”

I was able to import user settings without a problem. I suspect the issue roots in plugin settings. So, removing user settings may be an overkill, and maybe is should be a last resort in deleting settings.

  • ”However, I never export my settings because I like to go through them periodically because, for example, with each update a new or improved setting or two may appear, and I can reinforce my knowledge and/or improve the settings by going through them. ”

I have configured the keyboard settings heavily. I don't really want to go through them periodically :)

But a good thing that I learned from this exercise is that it is possible to export/import settings. Maybe I will save time in future installations/migrations! Every cloud has a silver lining :)
