Repair function simply does not work

I have a Spanish to English translation of Articles of Association and have typed the work Chairman for 'Presidente' which is offered by the SDL Language Cloud. This happens every time. The system simply does not learn. Paul Filkin, please help!

  • Hi ,

I discussed this kind of issue with our MT team in the past, so here’s the official answer which may be helpful.

Our AdaptiveMT technology is designed to not only learn good new things, but to avoid learning bad things.

It actually has a bias towards not learning unless there is good evidence (in the spirit of the American judicial system, the non-adapted translation is correct until proven guilty :) ).

In practice, this means it’s harder to “adapt” one-word phrases rather than multi-word phrases; and even for longer phrases it’s harder to adapt common words, that the non-adapted system already is confident about.

Thus, the system only learns new translations for it when it’s in a larger context, and it is repeated in that larger context.

I’m not sure it’s worth investigating why this particular change will not be used as it won’t change it’s ability to correct it. But perhaps you can try adding some sentences with different context rather than a repeat of the same one, also try adding a custom dictionary in your Language Cloud account.

  • Hi Paul, thanks for the explanation. It's a bit disappointing, like making a product and then saying you can't use it. It doesn't really make sense. The repair function should also function with just one word if the system detects that a certain word is constantly being changed. Appreciate your input.
