I can't see or open a newly-created term-based translation memory

I can't see or open a newly-created term-based translation memory. When I try to open a new document, I can see it on the list of translation memories, but the icon is missing the orange triangle. I tried deleting the TM and creating a new one with a new name, but got the same result. I currently have over a dozen TMs in my list and they all work properly, but I don't know why this one doesn't! Can anyone suggest a fix for this?

Merci, Lise

  • Hi Ali, Thanks for persisting in helping me find a solution to my problem! I'm not very versant in Trados so I expect I'm not explaining myself very clearly.

It turns out that I cannot open the faulty translation memory using the “open translation memory”. The only place I see it is when I try to link it to a document that I am opening for translation. When I deleted it and renamed it, I copied/pasted/saved the first few paragraphs of the document in Trados to see if it would populate the new translation memory. For that reason, I don’t believe the TM is empty (although I can’t open it to confirm this!!). What I do know is that it does not resemble the screen capture you sent of an empty TM.

When I use Trados, I start by opening a document for translation in the Editor section and linking the document to the desired translation memory. Then I open that same TM in the Translation Memories section. This allows me to search for short strings of text that may not be spontaneously suggested by Trados. That is what I mean by “opening the TM to search it for future documents”. That is what I can’t do with this particular TM.

I have successfully created and used over a dozen other TMs over the years and all have worked properly… except for this one. Since the icon for the faulty TM was different from the others, I thought that was a clue as to why it doesn’t work properly.

I hope this helps clarify what the nature of the problem is. Thanks in advance if you have any other ideas.

  • Hi ,

When you say you can't open it, is this because you can't see it with the other TMs you use? If so, it could be that it has been saved somewhere else in your file structure, for example in a folder called 'Tm' in the 'project' structure created when you opened the document... There are too many possible reasons for me to be able to say for sure what's causing this but if you can access it from your translation document open in Studio Editor View, it must be possible to find it via the Translation Memory View also.

However, you don't need to open the TM separately to the translation document to search in it, because you can use Concordance. You can highlight a word, words or phrase in the Source or Target segment in the sdlxliff then hit 'F3' and, depending on your settings for how many and in what order, any matching results will be displayed in the Concordance window that opens up in the Studio Editor view.

You can also type into the Concordance search line and choose to search in the Source or Target language.

Take a look at these entries in SDL Studio 2017 online help, which cover what the concordance is and how to use it:

    I hope this helps!

    All the best,

    Ali
