MacBook Pro disk space problems

Hello. I use a MacBook Pro divided with Parallels and am having disk space problems. Could anyone tell me please which files can be safely deleted and where I will find them? I use Trados 2017 SR1, Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac and macOS High Sierra 10.13.4.

  • Hello Steven. Parallels has as much disk space as is possible to give it, so nothing more can be be done there. Do you mean that I can delete the Studio 2011, 2014 etc files under Documents? I was wondering if maybe SDL generates files that can be deleted in order to free up disk space.
  • Hello

I think we need to be clear here which files we are referring to before deleting.

If you have older Studio versions still installed and no longer work with these- you can remove these happily from your system as these are simply wasting space.

(via Windows control panel/Programs and Features).

However if you are referring to the project files/completed translations that you completed in previous versions, you must decide whether 1) delete from your machine or 2) transfer to an external hard drive (and then delete from the parallels virtual drive).

As with all computer programs - there are always 'temp' files left behind every time you use a program. These you can safely delete (after your programs have been shut down correctly and your work saved) either manually or using a proprietary software for example CCLEANER.

This temp files however in the grand scheme of things in this situation, wont really free up as much space as you need and I would therefore really suggest considering upgrading the HD

  • Hi ,

Any temp files that Studio generates are very unlikely to free up enough space if you're already running low.

The Studio 2011, 2014 etc. files under Documents are going to be your Translation Memories, Termbases, Projects etc. so probably ont a good idfea to delete these unless you don't use them or need them anymore. What Steve meant was the program files which you don't delete manually, you remove these through the Windows Control Panel as he said.

Sounds like a good time to get a decent windows machine... more space, less cost and no parallels ;-)

  • Hi Paul and Steve. Thanks for the advice. It's unclear to me which program files I could delete and how to remove them through the windows control panel. Would it be possible for you to provide more detailed instructions? In the meantime I have ordered another 500GBs of disk space and am wondering if it will be enough.
  • Hi ,

Just to say this again... you don't delete any program files. You remove them through the windows control panel. There is a feature in there called "Add/Remove Programs" and this will allow you to select the versions of Studio you don't use (anything that does not say 2017 in the name) and safely remove them.

You didn't say which version of windows you use so this may help.

    Close all SDL applications.

    Open the Control Panel:
    - Windows Vista/7: Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    - Windows 8: Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
    - Windows 10: Right-click on Start > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features.

Click/highlight the relevant SDL product from the list (e.g. SDL Trados Studio 2015) and click Uninstall.
