Nothing is okay!

To my dismay, I had never noticed this problem until today. In 2017, I installed the new version. Since sdlxiff documents are always provided to me, it does not cause any problems, but now I am receiving from a new client documents in Word or Excel format that I can not open. I clicked on check for updates, which took me to the site. I tried to install the updates and I always get the same message. When I try to open the documents, not with "Open a project", but with Translate a single document, I get an error message that says: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. I read that P.Filkin and L. Lopes had responded to similar cases, but I tried as Paul suggested to delete the Templates \ default file. I reinitialized Trados ... and I still get the message that an important update is available everytime I open. To summarize the situation, I can work with SDL Trados 2017 only if I receive sdlxiff files. Do you suggest that I should send my license back and reinstall Studio from scratch? Thank you!

  • Hi ,

I would try a reset first as this often resolves strange behaviour. You could use this app for the reset and this will also explain what you will lose by carrying out a reset before you do it:

    appstore.sdl.com/.../

But if you'd rather do this manually then rename this folder (just add _old to the end or something, it's not important what you rename it to) and restart Studio:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0

So the path would become this:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0_old

If you can't find this folder then you need to unhide your hidden files/folders:

    www.howtogeek.com/.../

  • Hello Paul,
I have run the App "Freshstart" and it seems that everything runs smoothly. Hence, I have tried opening a few Word documents and for some of them I still get an "Error" message "Oject reference not set to an instance of an object but the document opens anyway! If y click close, I have my source and target looking normal and not missing anything. I can only save it (CTRL+S) and I cannot save the target as with (Shift+F12). I didn't try to use an Excel file yet. Is there an explanation for this? Thank you. Johanne Lalonde-Arbour
  • Hi

It would be helpful if you could post the error stack as the object reference title is a very generic one.  There will be more detail in the underlying error text and this might help find the problem.

So save the error stack to your desktop as shown below and then add it to a reply:

  • Hi

Thank you for this.  I think, given you have already tried a reset and you already tried deleting your templates that a clean install is in order... try the following.

    1. Uninstall Studio

Now manually delete these folders if they are still there (back up your TMs, Termbases, AutoSuggest Dictionaries and Projects first in case you make a mistake):

    c:\ProgramData\Package Cache\SDL\SDLTradosStudio2017\
    c:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio5\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2017\Project Templates\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2017\Projects\projects.xml

I think that's about it for a clean install. Then reinstall.

If you still have problems after this I'd recommend you log a ticket with support so an engineer can look at this for you. This is clearly an installation problems and for licensing or installation issues that prevent you from working we have a route for all customers to get help. This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

    http://support.xl8.one

Just fill in the form and submit it. Make sure your email address is entered correctly or nobody will be able to get back in touch with you.

    Regards

  • Forgive me for asking but if I make a backup of all my data on Webroot (I do this once a month normally), are the components TMs, Termbases, AutoSuggest Dictionaries and Projects, going to be backed up. Correct me if I'm wrong the first step is to return on the SDL Website and return the licence? Thank you, Johanne L. A.
  • Hi ,

If you include these components in your backup then yes, they will be backed up. None of them are program files, theye are all in your documents.

Also note that none of the instructions I gave you should delete these files unless for some strange reason you saved your resources in these locations.

Also there is no rerason to return your licence first, but it won't hurt!

  • One last question if you allow me. After your last message, I restarted SDL Freshstart, clicked on "Studio", selected all the files, then "removed all the files", and then clicked on "repair studio". Once this was done, I clicked on "Restore folders". After this, I opened a couple of Word docx and everything seemed fine. When I open the application, I now get a message "this application is up-to-date. Hence there's this one Word document I try to work with and I get the following message: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." It's a Word docx 2015 with an image, footers and hyperlinks. Could this be the problem? Should I still log a ticket?
  • Hi , clicking on "restore folders" will have undone the fix you put in place. Try again and this time don't click on "restore folders". If it still doesn't work then log a ticket.
