Opening a Partially Translated Project for Translation

I am trying to work on a partially translated project for the first time, and I can't figure out how to open it for editing in Trados 2015.  I received it as a package and opened it. Then I went into project settings and added some TMs and termbases. The project is set as active on the projects tab, but when I go to the files tab the option to "open for translation" is not available (i.e. grayed-out).  Does anyone know what's wrong?  Again, this is my first time working with a project that others have worked on, so I don't know the technical nuances of shared work.

In case you're wondering, I'm not part of a team collaborating on the project, otherwise I would ask them about this.  I've just been given a partially translated package.

    Hi 

    Without seeing a screenshot of your Files View I can't be sure why this is.

    The most likely reason would be that you have the source language files visible, rather than the target.

    Here is how that would look on a translation from English to French...

    Source file is highlighted but Open... options are greyed out:

    Click on the little down arrow next to the language name at the left and select the target language and file:

    If the above is not the case for you, then it may be that the sdlxliff file has been added to the package by mistake as a reference file only, for example. The quickest way around this (particularly as it's the weekend and you probably can't contact the client) is to create a new project and add all the items from the unpackaged one. If that still doesn't work, then it must be the file itself that has incorrect properties somehow.

    Hi Alison,

    Thank you for responding.  No file is showing on my files tab (except in the side menu, where the project appears with its target language):

    Here's my projects tab, in case it helps any.  The project I'm trying to do is the 20602878 project:

    I have a feeling that the problem is a very simple one.  I'm still pretty new to Trados, and previously I've only done solo work and single document translations.

    Hi Laura,

    The file/s should be in one of the folders on the left here:

    You'll see I've highlighted the + signs. Usually clicking on '+' opens the folder structure up so you can see what's inside.

    With that file structure, normally the file will be accessible via either of the source folders...

    Double-click and it should appear in the right-hand pane ready for translation as usual.

    Should work no probs.

    Alison,

    Thank you! That helped me open the files for editing. Now I only have to figure out which of the hundreds of files in the project are intended for me to translate. :-/

    I'm so sorry, I have been in bed all day today unwell so did not see your reply until now.

    If you highlight all the files, you can open them altogether as a 'virtual merge'.

    Here's how it's explained in Help:

    To merge files virtually in the Files view - QuickMerge:

    Procedure

    1. Open the project in the Files view and select all the files that you want to merge using Ctrl or Shift.
    2. Right-click on one of the selected files and select Open for Translation, Open for Review or Open for Sign Off, as required. You can also press Enter to quickly open for translation the selected files as one document merged virtually. Selecting the files and pressing Ctrl+ Enter will open the files for translation as individual files.
    3. The selected files open in the Editor as one single merged document. SDL Trados Studio automatically names the document merged virtually [Multiple Files - Name of the project (Names of the files included in the merging)]. The name of the project is trimmed automatically to show only the first 20 characters. Also, the names of the files are trimmed to show only the first 50 characters. This naming convention makes it easier to distinguish between merged files if you have multiple merged files open in the Editor or in theRecent Documents list. When you save and close files merged virtually, Studio splits these files back and saves them as individual files
      Note: You can only use the QuickMerge feature for single files. Files which have been previously merged physically cannot also be merged virtually. This means that you cannot combine physically merged files with single files to open them as one single document merged virtually.

    When you save and close files merged virtually, SDL Trados Studio splits these files back and saves them as individual files.

    I hope I'm not too late and that you can at least open some of the files together, it makes it so much faster.

    Some of the content's links are no longer working, for example live support, because the latest versions are 2017 and 2019.

    The 2019 version is quite user-friendly, it has a 'Tell me what you want to do' button similar to Word...

    I understand that upgrading is expensive though and  Studio 2015 still works OK and there are plenty of folk here on the SDL Community who remember how to use it and can help you with queries.
