SDL 2019 unable to process pdf files

Hi all,

I have recently updated to SDL 2019 but I am frustrated that it is unable to open pdf files. What could be wrong?

  • Hi

You have not told us anything about how far you get, or what messages you receive, or what actually happens?

Maybe this article will give you some ideas?

  • Hi Paul,

Thank you for your reply. It is not about pdf only. When I try to translate a single document be it Word or pdf file, I can't go further than selecting the file for translation. When I click OK on the Translation memory and Document Settings window, nothing happens. Can you help please?
  • Hi

I spent some time this morning trying to guess what might be happenning for you but I can't.  I wonder if this is a hi-res issue and you just can't see the buttons to move onto the next step?  Please provide a screenshot or something of what you see to help us understand why you can't move onto the next stage.

Below is a text editor with 'Description' and various formatting tools, including an 'Insert imagevideofile' button highlighted by a red arrow.

  • Hi All,

I am also having the same issue. When I try to add a pdf file to a project I am unable to get any further than the first step of converting into translatable format (even though the project is set up to accept pdfs) the message it brings up is "SolidFrameworkNativePINVOKE" any ideas?
  • Hello ,

Could you provide us with more information please - maybe even the error stack.
Is the project, one you have created- or a client PPX?
Are you able to share the PDF (swhale@sdl.com)-

Could you also please let us know if you have any apps installed as this error message may indicate a clash somewhere and i would like to try and replicate this.

  • Hi Steven,

    Thanks for your answer.
My Trados is set up in French, so here is the exact message in full in French - Une exception a été levée par l'initialiseur de type pour 'SolidFrameworkNativePINVOKE'

I'm trying to add the PDF to a project that i have newly created, but i have also tried to add the document, along with others, to existing projects (with which I have previously had no problems preparing pdfs) and I get the same message every time.

I don't think I have any apps installed, just Microsoft Office and the like.
  • Hello ,

If you say you have been able to add PDF's previously without any problem- then the issue appears to lie with this particular PDF.

Therefore to test this- try and open the PDF as a single file translation and then immediately try 'SAVE TARGET AS'.
If you get an error at this stage, you know that the file itself is problematic and you may need to process this outside of Studio-

    community.sdl.com/.../3182.how-to-work-with-a-pdf-file

PDF files can often be problematic due to the source and quality-

  • Thanks Steven,
I've just tried that and I get the same error message. However I have also tried the same process with two other files I successfully uploaded and translated in Studio last week and I get the same error, so I don't think it is an issue with the pdf in itself (I'm talking about press releases downloaded directly from corporate websites)
  • Hi ,

If these are only press releases- could you share them with me please and I will try and duplicate the issue.

  • Hi,

Was this issue ever resolved? I recently upgraded to Studio 2019 and I seem to have the exact same issue. The program is completely new on my computer and I have basically done nothing with the settings, aside from that I have it set to old SDLX shortcuts.

I've tried several different old pdf files that worked before, but none of them gets converted. I tried downloading a pdf from Eur-Lex and using that, which also didn't work. Available here: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:32016L2258&from=SV

The error message reads "Type initiator for SolidFrameworkNativePINVOKE triggered an exception. Failed to load C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio15\SolidFramework\SolidFrameworkNative, Error code = 1114"

    I'm using Windows 10.

Not urgent for me right now, but would be good to get this fixed. Help please?

Let's see if I can attach the complete awsome error message:
