Main or Project TM?

Hi everyone,

Problems only seem to arise when one is under pressure!
Before you can say "Oh no, not another TM question"...I have researched and google this one to no avail...

The file in question was previously translated in another SW.
I'm not going into details why.

I received the TM (as tmx file) from my client.
I created a new TM using this tmx file.

Here's the scenario:
I'm in the editor mode, the newly created TM on the left-hand side is open (is that the project TM?).
The target segments contain the identical source segments. Why? No idea...

Translating this should be as easy as stealing candy from a baby, right? NO!
Selecting "Pre-translate file" from "Batch task" should do the trick...but it doesn't.
BTW, I also had selected "Update Main and Update Project TM" from the Batch Task.

However, when I open the TM and enter a source term or an entire sentence into "Source Text" in "Search Details" (no filters selected), voila, there is the translation.
And this is not only a fluke because I have tried it with multiple examples.

So here's the 60 mil $ question: Why does "Pre-translate" not work?

Thanks for ANY!!! help...this project is on the line.

  • Please go to Project Settings -> Language Pairs -> All language pairs -> Translation memories ... and add all the TMs you need there.
Now go to Project Settings -> Language Pairs -> Your language pair -> Translation memories and DEACTIVATE the check box there, if it is activated.

You may NOT add TMs at both places at the same time, so either you do so in All language pairs OR in the corresponding language pair, but not here and there.

Please read this to learn about the difference between File -> Options and Project settings: multifarious.filkin.com/.../

I assume you understand German, so you also could take advantage of the webinars offered by the German BDÜ. There is a monthly webinar called "Fragen Sie Dr. Studio" - it could be helpful in understanding how Studio works.

  • Hi

The message you're getting is because your TM has not been added at the All Language Pairs level, but rather at the specific language pair level. Try this:

Go to Project Settings - Language Pairs - German-English - Translation Memories. There you should see the following box checked:

Trados Studio screenshot showing the option to use different translation providers for the German-English language pair with buttons for Create, Use, Settings, and Remove.

This is what's causing the message you showed earlier.

If your TM has been added to the project, you should also see it here, with all the necessary boxes enabled:

Trados Studio screenshot displaying a translation memory named 'MyTM' added for the German-English language pair with options for Import, Export, and Upgrade.

Is this what you're seeing? If not, you can add your TM here by clicking on the Use button.

  • Hi all,

You have been very patient and helpful, thank you very much.

I'll promise, I'll go thru these suggestions with a fine-tooth comb so will know what to do in the future.
However, right now I had to switch to another SW, and voila, no problems whatsoever, I just have to figure out yet, how to convert the Trados file to THE OTHER SW file. :-)
But that seems to be easier than trying to figure out SDL at the moment

    Thanks again,

    Wolf
