Main or Project TM?

Hi everyone,

Problems only seem to arise when one is under pressure!
Before you can say "Oh no, not another TM question"...I have researched and google this one to no avail...

The file in question was previously translated in another SW.
I'm not going into details why.

I received the TM (as tmx file) from my client.
I created a new TM using this tmx file.

Here's the scenario:
I'm in the editor mode, the newly created TM on the left-hand side is open (is that the project TM?).
The target segments contain the identical source segments. Why? No idea...

Translating this should be as easy as stealing candy from a baby, right? NO!
Selecting "Pre-translate file" from "Batch task" should do the trick...but it doesn't.
BTW, I also had selected "Update Main and Update Project TM" from the Batch Task.

However, when I open the TM and enter a source term or an entire sentence into "Source Text" in "Search Details" (no filters selected), voila, there is the translation.
And this is not only a fluke because I have tried it with multiple examples.

So here's the 60 mil $ question: Why does "Pre-translate" not work?

Thanks for ANY!!! help...this project is on the line.

  • Hi

Let's hope this gets solved quickly so you can meet your deadline! First, a couple of clarifications:

What do you mean the TM is open on the left-hand side? Can you share a screenshot? For the TM to be used during pre-translation, it needs to be added to your project, which can be done via Project Settings - All Language Pairs - Translation Memory and Automated Translation.

Also, what do you mean about the target segments containing the source segments? (screenshot?) Do you mean that the source segments have been copied over to the target segments? If so, this can happen during pre-translation if the right setting is selected, as shown below, could this be your case?

Trados Studio settings window showing Pre-translate settings with 'Copy source to target' option selected, highlighted in red.

  • Thanks, Nora,

What do I mean the TM is open?

When I click "Translation Memories" on the bottom left-hand side while in the "Editor"

mode, the TM opens - right?

Trados Studio interface showing 'Editor' tab selected and 'Translation Memories' option highlighted on the bottom left-hand side.

When I now enter a term, sentence, etc. in "Search Text" - top left-hand corner -

this search item will be found in the TM:

Trados Studio 'Search Details' panel with 'Source Text' filled with 'Waermedehnung in Stahlrohrleitungen', 'Search entire TM' selected, and search results displaying a match in the TM.

So, if I can find it in the TM, why does pre-translation not find it?
BTW, I had already all the setting selected that you mentioned in your response.

    Thanks,
    Wolf

  • Hi

The Translation Memories view is independent from the Editor, so while you have your TM open in the Translation Memories view, it does not mean it's associated with your project and therefore, if it's not, it won't be used for pre-translation.

Can you go to Project Settings - All Language Pairs - Translation Memory and Automated Translation and share a screenshot of what you see there?

You should have something similar to the following (with your own TM, of course):

Trados Studio Project Settings window showing All Language Pairs, Translation Memory and Automated Translation tab with a Translation Memory selected.

  • Hi Nora,

I don't want to take up too much of your time, however, following your advice, I am getting this:

Information dialog box stating 'This translation memory 'Tanner Lindau' will not be used for the following language pair: German (Germany)-> English (United Kingdom)'. Instructions to edit the translation memories are provided.

Although, the TM is in en_GB

Trados Studio interface showing the translation memory 'Tanner Lindau (de-DE->en-GB)' selected with a project file 'GF Piping Systems - Gehai' listed below.

    Thanks anyway,

    Wolf.

  • Please go to Project Settings -> Language Pairs -> All language pairs -> Translation memories ... and add all the TMs you need there.
Now go to Project Settings -> Language Pairs -> Your language pair -> Translation memories and DEACTIVATE the check box there, if it is activated.

You may NOT add TMs at both places at the same time, so either you do so in All language pairs OR in the corresponding language pair, but not here and there.

Please read this to learn about the difference between File -> Options and Project settings: multifarious.filkin.com/.../

I assume you understand German, so you also could take advantage of the webinars offered by the German BDÜ. There is a monthly webinar called "Fragen Sie Dr. Studio" - it could be helpful in understanding how Studio works.
