2019: Preview not working in Review mode

I am proofreading two *.sdlxliff files, one from an XLS and one from a PPT.

If I open them in Review mode, the Preview icon (View > Preview) is grayed out. But if I open them in Tanslation mode, it works just fine (opens Excel and Power Point, respectively).

What's the rationale here?

I am just opening the file in translation mode, using track changes and the preview function, and then I close the file and open it in the Review mode to mark as Reviewed all segments. However, I don't get why a Reviewer should not have access to the file Preview.

  • Hi

This behaviour isn't by design. I work in Review mode most of the time and the Preview function works fine for me in Review mode so long as I have the necessary 3rd party software installed.

Try opening a file in Review mode and clicking on 'Reset Window Layout' on the View tab here:

If that doesn't work, try clicking Preview OFF and ON again here:

If that doesn't work, try a Windows Repair of Studio...

    1. Close all SDL applications.
    2. Open the Control Panel:
      • Windows Vista/7Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Windows 8: Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
      • Windows 10: Right-click on Start > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features
      • - or type 'Control Panel' in the search line on your bottom Windows toolbar.
    3. Click/highlight the relevant SDL product from the list (e.g. SDL Trados Studio 2017 SR1) and click 'Repair' either on the top toolbar or on the right-click dropdown menu.
    4. Restart Studio.

I hope one of the above methods sorts this out for you...

    All the best
