Verification option (F8) very very slow in Studio 2019

Each time I try running the F8 verification option on a signle file (even a very short file of about 10 segments), the operation takes ages.

Even cancelling it (because too time-consuming) takes ages.

Is there a Reason for this? maybe a setting ?

  • Hi

I think we have discussed the grammar checker before. There is no API for this feature in Microsoft so the app is a bit of a hack and it's susceptible to all kinds of problems and things that could go wrong. We have tried very hard to replicate issues reported, setting up environments to match the operating systems, languages, versions of office, installed language packs, versions of Studio etc. but we are simply unable to find the cause of the problems. For some users it inexplicably seems to work... for others it does not.

I have said before I am inclined to simply remove this from the appstore altogether because I don't think there is a strong platform for developing it and too many things that seem to prevent it from working. I only left it there for the users who seem to be able to get some value from it. Although it seems to work for me the results are nowhere near as good as they were the first time we created it, and when I run my test document through Microsoft Word itself the reults are similarly very poor, although still different to the results I get in Studio.

Altogether a very inconsistent and puzzling feature in Word!

  • Hi Paul, I know we discussed this many times :-)
I know that it does not work for me the right way it should, nevertheless it tells me that there is a grammar error so I can look closely to the sentence and find it by myself. My only concern is that during the update from version 1.3 to the new version 1.9 something has changed and the checker takes now ages to verify the sements. The trick to not display the details fastens the command Verify. But when you click on the message, to go the concerned segmens, Studio freezes for minutes.
My question is, if it isa possible to revert the app to the 1.3 version, where this behavior is missing, and update it for 2019. I have still the 1.3 version installed on Studio 2017 and I do not have this problem.
If this is not possible, then I will definitively uninstall this plugin in Studio 2019 and wait for the update of Language Tools to Studio 2019 (already contacted the developer).
    Thank you for your support,
    Angelo

This would be a pointless exercise.  We got to the new versions by making these changes only:

2017 -> all we did was add the maxversion attribute to the 1.3 version to prevent it from being installed into 2019. It won't work at all in 2019.

2019 -> all we did was update the 1.3 version so it works in 2019

So you are effectively asking us to do what we have already done!

  • Hi Paul (pfilkin),

I believe what you say, but somewhere something went wrong when you updated the app. You can try it yourself.

In Studio 2017, to verify a segment it takes me 1 second with 1.3 (with Show error descripion on), but 25 seconds with 1.9.01 (with Show error description off). With longer segments or bigger files (I didn't figure that out) it takes more.

But it's ok, I will not use the app with Studio 2019, and if I really need it, I will verify in Studio 2017 with version 1.3.

    Best regards,

    Angelo
