How to quickly determine the remaining word count, excluding segments that are repeated within the project

Hello,

When working through translations in CAT tools, I frequently need to check how much work I still have to do to meet my daily production target. I need to be able to determine, quickly, the number of non-translated words that remain to be done, excluding segments that are 100% repetitions. I want to be able to do this without running a full analysis against a possibly huge translation memory, as it takes far too long and I am not interested in match levels, only in the number of non-repeated words that remain to be done.

The Trados WIP report is no good because it does not exclude 100% internal reps, leaving me with no idea of how much remains to be done.

I can do this in about ten seconds in MemoQ by filtering on untranslated segments and analysing the view, with the memories excluded from the analysis.

How do I do it in Trados Studio?

Any solution to this would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Neil

  • I'll answer my own question, in case anyone wonders: select all files in the Files view, click Analysis Statistics at the bottom of the page. The total No Match excludes reps. It can be updated quickly using the batch task "Word Count".
  • Hi Neil,
There is even a more convenient way:

Open any document in the Editor. At the bottom of the screen, the status line shows status icons and percentage values for the document that is open.
Double-click one of the percentage values. A window opens where you can set the Display Value (second field) to "Both". This will have the effect that in the future, both the number of words and the percentage will be shown in the status line. The values are updated with every segment you confirm. For example, the values next to the "white icon" show how many words with status "Not translated" are remaining.
This helps you keep track of your progress.

  • Hi Annette,

    Thank you for your reply.

The problem is that this information does not exclude repetitions, making it useless on large packages with many thousands of 100% reps. Also, the information I posted above (given to me by an SDL rep) is no good because it requires a full analysis to update, which is too time-consuming. There is a "community advanced filter" which I have installed which can show only the non-translated segments and the first instance of repetitions, which is exactly what I want, but it shows no statistics for this view.

All I want to do is to be able to track my hourly progress. Surely there must be a way of doing this?
  • Ok, I think I have finally found a user-friendly way to track the work that remains to be done on an ongoing basis:

Firstly, install the "Community Advanced Display Filter". Then filter on "not translated" and "repetitions excluding first occurrences" and set them to a status other than "not translated", such as "translation rejected". The change of status excludes them from the ongoing word count displayed at the bottom of the page. The word count that is constantly updated at the bottom of the editor will then show only the remaining work to be done, i.e. the non-translated segments excluding 100% reps. Propagation will continue as usual and the segments with the different status will gradually be overwritten with the propagations.

This means that the word count figure at the bottom of the editor gives an ongoing true count of the remaining work excluding 100% reps.

I hope others find this useful and I am, of course, open to suggestions if anyone has a better way.

    Kind regards,
    Neil
