Activating Bilingual Excel file types???

I am using Trados Studio 2019 and want to translate a bilingual Excel file.

I understand that the priority of the file type needs to be changed in order to do this. However, I can't see how to change the priority. The instructions in the help file are given here: https://docs.sdl.com/LiveContent/content/en-US/SDL%20Trados%20Studio%20Help-v5/GUID-4B092AE2-FB4B-4EB7-8164-2BBF36B6E1E6

It says "Select the Bilingual Excel file type, and then use the Move Up/Move Down buttons to position the Bilingual Excel file type above the Microsoft Excel 2007-2013 file type". But where are the "Move Up/Move Down" buttons? They don't seem to be in the "project settings" > "file types" dialogue.

Anyone know how to activate the bilingual Excel file type?

Thanks!

  • Hello Neil,

That is really straightforward. To move the file type up, you click on "Project Settings", then on "File type" and then in the big window select the file type you want to move:

Trados Studio Project Settings window showing File Types tab with a list of file types. Bilingual Excel file type is highlighted and an arrow points to the 'Move Up' button.

Another way to make Studio use the bilingual Excel file type is to deactivate the other Excel file types in this project (uncheck the boxes left of the file name in the big window).

    Have a good day!

  • Hi

In addition to the help from Daniel, it may be worth creating a project template just for the Bilingual Excel filetype. That way you just select that template whenever you wish to use it and that might be helpful if you don't have lots of other templates where Bilingual Excel is used from time to time as well.

  • Thanks for your replies, but here is a screenshot of my Project Settings > File Type dialogue.

Screenshot of Trados Studio 2019 Project Settings showing File Type dialogue with missing checkboxes and move upmove down buttons.

As you can see, there are no checkboxes and no "move up/move down" buttons. This is Trados Studio 2019, build 15.0.1.36320

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Neil

You don't have "File Types" selected, but the file type "Bilingual Excel". Click on "File types" and you will get the up/down option.

Trados Studio screenshot showing Project Settings window with 'Bilingual Excel' file type selected instead of 'File Types'. An arrow points to 'File Types' with instructions to click on it for more options.

  • Duh!

Thanks Daniel! One for my "how to" notes!
  • Neil:

I have followed your instructions (which match a tutorial video on YT) but my SDL Trados insists on NOT using the Bilingual Excel file type, but rather the regular Excel file type.

I went to File -> Options, selected File Types.

Moved Bilingual Excel to the top of the list of Excel file types

Used the preview function to check that my work file would be processed the way I wanted, and the preview looked correct.

Then I go to File -> New -> Project and create the project. But when I select the Excel file to add it to the project, Studio uses "SpreadsheetML" instead of "BilingualExcel" to convert the file.

    What am I doing wrong?

  • File -> Options is the wrong way. You MUST adapt the project template you are using or—if adding to an existing project—the corresponding project settings.
