My Trados 2014 is not using the TM with the error "This translation memory will not be used for the following language pairs"

I am using Trados Studio 2014 and trying to add translation memories. I try to add a TM to the list and I get the error in a popup box when I add it, "This translation memory will not be used for the following language pairs" and though it looks like it adds the memory it doesn't. Anything in concordance is only showing up in what I have translated.

I have seen a fix from google that suggests I should click a checkbox "Use different translation providers for this language pair", but I don't appear to have this option as you can see below in the screenshot.

Any help is appreciated.

Screenshot of Trados Studio 2014 Project Settings window showing an error message 'This translation memory will not be used for the following language pairs' with a list of language pairs below. The 'Use different translation providers for this language pair' checkbox is not visible.

  • Also, if I add these individually at the language pair setting, they are all greyed out and I cannot select the TMs to be updated.
  • Hi

I might be asking the obvious, but could you please confirm that the memory you would like to add has the same source and target language as that of the translation project?

Is this memory working well if added to another project?

    Hoping to hear from you.

    Best wishes

  • Hello

I don't understand this part of the tool very well. Here is a screen shot of the language pairs, I am translating from English into Danish and I can go into the project settings and see that it is from US English on the right hand side of the panel. Am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks

Trados Studio screenshot showing language pairs with English to Danish selected. Project settings panel on the right indicates US English as source language.

I have had a bit of a fiddle with it and have managed to get the other memories added to the lower section, but I am not sure what the difference is between the two sections. Usually everything is in the top section and updates fine.

    Thanks

  • Hi

You need to have your TMs all at the specific language level OR all at the all language pairs level. If you mix and match you will see that message.

The difference is that in a multilingual project it is possible to have different settings per language.

  • Hello Paul

Thanks for coming back with this.

What is the difference between the two boxes, can you point me at the documentation that explains the "specific language level" or "all language level pairs". They're just all memories to me. I received multiple memories for the files from the customer and some opened in the top box, and others in the bottom. So was it the case that they had different setting per language?

This also may be associated with another point. I did a standard install of Trados 2014, and all my translation memories were stored in a central place (C:users/trados studio 2014 etc). Then about a year ago, this didn't work for one of my customers, and I got that file to work by moving the memory into a customer file folder elsewhere. Now all the work that I do stores all the memories in that customer folder, instead of the previous generic one. I'd like to set it back to the normal global location. Where can I go to set this globally? Once I have, will I need to merge all the old and new memories together?

Or am I (likely!) misunderstanding completely how memories work in Trados?

Let me know if it would be easier to talk through this.
    Many thanks

All Language Pairs allows you to apply a single set of rules to all the Translation Memories in your project and acoss all the languages if you have a multilingual project.  The specific language pairs allows you to set unique rules for the translation memories in each language pair for your project.

I know this may not make much sense if you are only working with one language pair anyway, but the logic in the application is such that if you apply any settings to the translation memoroes at the specific language pair then you will have to make all changes there for the project, including adding new translation memories.

Most users come across this message when they have received packages that were created from a multilingual project.  The project manager may have set up the rules to suit each language pair and then just sent you one language pair to work on.

    Yes.

You don't need to move translation memories to have them available for you anywhere.  You simply point to the location of the translation memories in your project settings.  You can create different project templates for each customer if you like and point to different memories in whatever location you like.  Or you can set up default memories for every project in File -> Options if you don't use templates.

  • Thanks Paul for the quick response. I put this as a follow up to another post elsewhere, but I am getting packages from my customers with in-built TMs which are behaving in a way that I don't recognise.

What is concerning me is that options are now appearing on multiple lines and the TM doesn't appear to be updating. Am I doing something wrong to import this into the project?

I just want to be able to use the memory, have my translation being saved into it, and am worried that I am wasting my time translating this large document if the TM is not being updated.

Trados Studio Project Settings window showing a warning message that the translation provider 'TM' could not be opened and has been disabled.

Can you help me unpick the options I am seeing above? I don't know why some of the options are greyed out. Do I need to go back to the supplier? Am I unpackaging this in the wrong way? What do I need to do to make it work?

    Thanks

  • As I mentioned, these are Project TMs and they have been provided to you by the project manager. All you need to do is add yourr own TM to this project, make sure the update TM box is checked, and then all the work you do will be updated into your own TM.

Updating the Project TMs is unnecssary and irrelevant anyway since they are not returned to the Project Manager in the return package. Only the bilingual files (sdlxliff) are sent back in the return package.

  • Thank you Paul, very big help and I understand this better now. I can see that the memories are not being updated in the client TM, but if I add my own, then it should start to be added in there, so I would not lose it.

I will test what you have suggested this afternoon and let you know if I have a further problem

Thanks again for the help you have given, this support has been so helpful.
    Kind regards
