URGENT HELP NEEDED! The .docx saved from a long SDLXLIFF in Studio won't open in Microsoft Word. How can we solve this?

We have just finished translating a long Word document (>2 000 segments) in Studio 2019 SR1 version 15.1.2.4878.

When we saved the long SDLXLIFF file (over 2 000 segments) using the "save the target as" (Shift+F12) as

a WORD (.docx) document, it looked as though Studio got through the process quickly,... too quickly, in fact.

When we double-clicked the resulting the translation, the DOCX file from the Target language, an Error Message popped up.

In a nutshell, not only will MS WORD simply not open the file, but

it is not clear to us what went wrong and how we can fix the problem.

Despite not knowing what to do exactly, we went back to Studio, in the EDITOR view,

and combed through the 2 000 + source and target segments: we found a couple of empty target segments.

We fixed those and thought we had identified the problem. For a 2nd time we saved the SDLXLIFF as a WORD doc,

but again upon attempting to open the resulting 'DOCX file, the very same error message popped up.

We really need to fix this because we have to deliver the translation very soon.

Can somebody help please.

    The error you're getting from Word is pinpointing the problem in one of the footers. Most likely it's an automatic field that is presenting the issue. It's possible there may be more issues, but this is the first one it's run into, and it won't be possible to tell if there are others until it's been resolved.

    If I were troubleshooting this, I would first try deleting all of the footers in the source, and then save a separate clean copy of that and run it back through the TM. If you haven't already, you'll need to update the TM from the xliff file using the "Update main TMs" batch task first. It's possible you may have to put some matches in manually, but the vast majority should come in when you pre-translate the newly created source file using the same TM.

    I would also at that stage run a Verify task to find missing tags in the target. It's possible to get this error even when all tags are copied across, but if there are tags missing, they could well be the cause. The rectangular, non-paired tags in particular cause problems when missing or mismatched, as they represent concrete elements of the Word file. I would advise setting the tag options to "Tag ID" in the View tab in Studio in order to be sure that tags in source match target, and haven't been copied from a different segment.

    Once you've done all of that, save target as, and try to open. If it's fixed, great! Just need to post the footers back in from the source and overwrite them with the translation. If you get a different error message, post it so someone can take a look.
