Cannot add a translation memory

Hello,

This is the error: Trados Studio error message window overlaying the 'Project Settings' screen, with the message 'You cannot add a project translation memory to the list of main translation memories.' and an 'OK' button. ("You cannot add a project translation memory to the list of main translation memories.".

I am adding it via "Use... -> File-based Translation Memory".

Adding the same via "Use... -> AnyTM: Any file-based TM..." gives no error.

  • The project manager has already added the project TM which file name matches exactly with the file name of my personal TM.

This is how the name of Server-based TM (supplied by the project manager via project package) looks like: Screenshot showing two Translation Memory files in Trados Studio, '_es-ES-et-EE.sdltm' indicating server location and 'Hispaania_Eesti.sdltm' indicating personal computer location..

If I hover the mouse on "_es-ES-et-EE.sdltm", the location line indicates that the TM of project manager is in the server.

If I hover the mouse on "Hispaania_Eesti.sdltm", the location line indicates that it is in my personal computer?

I have created a TM with the name "Hispaania_Eesti.sdltm" by myself a long time ago. Why is this linked with the server of a project manager?

Is it possible that I have accidentally included my personal TM with the return package to the project manager and now the project manager is using my TM in all their projects?

  • Hello

The return packages do not contain any TMs, so you could not have sent your TM to the project manager inadvertently.

The reason why you see the project TM located on your computer is that it is on your hard drive now, when you have imported the package it was also placed in the project folder along with the translatable files.

Can it be that the project manager simply renamed the project TM to this name for some reason before sending it in the package to you? This might be something to clarify with him.

But even if the names match it should be possible to add your TM as a normal file-based TM, as there is no such difference between project TMs and main TMs as long as they are both file-based.
Based on the details you gave I cannot really see why adding your TM to the project is not working. What if you try to add it on the All Language level?

(Just to clarify, the 'Server-based TM' in Studio means something different, not TMs located on a company network, a file server, but on SDL GroupShare which is a server-based solution to store and share resources. So even if a TM is on the network, it is considered a file-based TM in from Studio's point of view. They are marked with a globe icon:
Screenshot of Trados Studio showing a list of Translation Memories (TMs) with a globe icon next to 'Animals_GS' indicating it is a server-based TM.)

However, another idea which might be worth to try: you could open the project TM in the TM view of Studio, export its content, add it to your own TM, and then remove all TMs from the project and add yours only.

    Hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
    Greta

  • hi Paul- I have this reccuring problem, and you trieed to help me in the past

this is, that during work the auotomatic translation suddenly does not work- however the only thing that seems to work is "self-healing", meaning, it comes back when it feels like it... last time we talked i upgraded to studio 2021, but this does not cure the issue:

    will you please help me?

  • Yo should probably create a new thread for this issue you have raised because it doesn't seem to be related to this thread. That will help ensure you get a sensible response in here.  When you do this please provide the following information:

    • full version number of Trados Studio.  Current version is: Trados Studio 2021 - 16.2.9.9198
    • make sure you are clear about how you are using MT and which engine
      • in your screenshot it looks as though you are using an old MT facility (SDL Machine Translation as opposed to Language Weaver)
      • in your screenshot you also seem to adding MT via AnyTM which is also wrong

A fresh post with the correct details will be helpful and then I'm sure we can help get you running properly.
