SDL 2019 auto-substitution of numbers NOT WORKING

Project Settings --> Language Pairs --> "French -> English" --> Translation Memory and Automated Translation --> Auto-substitution

In the Auto-substitution dialog it makes no difference whether I check "Numbers" or not:

The effing heap of xxx calling itself a CAT tool seems to recognise a number in a segment (underlines it) but refuses point-blank to substitute it automatically.

e.g. a segment consisting of a currency figure "181 961 806,00 €" --> it considers that this "84% match" is the closest it can find: "-3 126 286,00 €".  Laughable if it weren't so pathetic, and if clients didn't oblige me to use this dreadful application.

e.g. 2: a segment consisting solely of a number: NOPE, too stupid to recognise that this is a number and should simply be copied into the target.

Also, why are some categories in bold here, Dates, Times, Alphanumeric strings, etc., but two categores not bolded: Numbers, Acronyms?

This question https://community.sdl.com/product-groups/translationproductivity/f/studio/21100/numbers-and-alphanumeric-strings-not-being-auto-substituted-consistently/73212#73212 provides no answer.

I've been just coping with this dysfunctionality for about a year, and just getting on DESPITE IT, as I regard SDL as a hindrance which I'm obliged to use, rather than a helpful tool.  Nor do I ever expect to get any solution here because I presume this is just baked-in amateurish dysfunctionality.

Hope springs eternal however. Please prove me wrong.

  • I'm not sure I 100% understand your question... but these are the defaults, all unbolded:

Trados Studio Auto-substitution settings with options for Dates, Numbers, Variables, Times, Measurements, Acronyms, and Alphanumeric strings, all unchecked.

So that would obviously be why.... you didn't change from the defaults. They are only bold if you uncheck them.

Perhaps you meant something else?  Maybe you don't understand the difference between File -> Options and Project Settings and you are making thingsbold in your projecs and then when you create new ones they are all unbold again?

  • Hi,

Thanks for the explanation about bolding there.

I have now sent you a .zip with a sample project where this incorrect behaviour happens (on my machine and in my SDL app).  I made a fresh TM for the purposes of it and I checked that "Numbers" is indeed checked for Auto-substitution.

One other thing: about a year ago, when I "upgraded" to SDL 2019, I made the mistake of "upgrading" further to some "Service Pack" I was meant to apply.  This then promptly killed regex Search-and-Replace functionality (there's a thread about this in this forum somewhere): someone from SDL acknoweldged that this Service Pack was indeed malfunctional in that way.  Because I use this Search-and-Replace regexes all the time, I had to waste more time working out how to get back to the "pre-SP" version of SDL 2019.

Anyway, just telling you that because my version may just possibly have a bearing on this current problem. When I go Help --> About, the version number is "Studio 2019 - 15.0.0.29074"

I'm not sure what you mean about the difference between File --> Options and Project settings. My understanding is that this "Numbers" Auto-substitution belongs to the TM ... whereas Files --> Options is about global settings ... and also I can't see anything under Files --> Options which relates to Auto-substitution.

Most of the projects I make are based on a "dummy" project which I just copy (it has the right settings) ... and each time I create a new TM by copying a gigantic old general TM (which I update at the end of the project). I don't believe any of this has a bearing on the non-auto-substitution of numbers... (though I could be wrong).

  • There is no problem with any kind of regex functionality in the current version of Studio. There indeed has been a short-term problem in S&R with one release nearly one year ago, but this has been dealt with within two or three weeks  with a cumulative update. So it would have been easier to wait just this time and not have so big problems.

As for your question about project and TM settings: first, search for Paul Filkin tea and settings and read this small blog entry.

Then please go to project settings and make sure, that in your proper language pair under TM and automated translation provider in Auto Substitution the number replacement is also activated. If not, this is the reason for your trouble.

Please also remember, that a TM or TMs may NOT be added simultaneously in All Language Pairs and in a proper language pair. You add it either here OR there, while the OR here is an EXCLUDING OR.

When asking for help here, please be as accurate as possible. Please always remember to give the exact version of product used and all possible error messages received. The better you describe your problem, the better help you will get.

  • Thanks but you should assume I would not have gone to the length of posting this problem here if I had not exhausted these basic issues.  I confirm that "Numbers" is checked under Auto-substitution for the TM in question.

As I say, if you wish I can send you my sample project which I have just created, at Paul's request. Please supply an email address if interested...
