OpenOffice Error - Unable to open translated document

Hi everyone,

I'm very new to Trados and to this community, so I hope I've posted this in the right forum.  I'd be grateful if you would shed some light on this issue.

I pasted a text from a webpage into OpenOffice Writer which left lots of formatting issues (see "Source file_ES" attached). Trados ran this as a translatable file, so I thought this would be fine. I kept all the tags while translating (See "editor" attached).

Then after having translated the entire document and saved the target (which can be seen from "OpenDocument Text file" attached), I get an error message (attached) stating:

"OpenOffice error 4,1.7 - Read error - Format error discovered in the file in sub-document content XML at 2,23667 (row, col)"

Does anyone know how I can avoid this problem? Was it due to the original formatting issues in the source document? If so, apart from removing all formatting, what else can I do to fix this from the source? There are grey spaces that separate words, I don't know how they got there nor how to remove them.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Adam

  • Hello ,

I think there are possibly a number of issues with the file and how this has been processed.

    Looking at your screen shot

here are grey spaces that separate words, I don't know how they got there nor how to remove them.

these grey spaces appear to be 'non breaking spaces'

This happens a lot I think, when you are copying text is such a manner into Open Office and therefore Studio is struggling to understand the formatting..

You could either hide the spaces (might still cause an issue in Studio) or possibly do a Search & Replace (in Open Office) and replace the non breaking space with simply normal spaces.

I would suggest properly formatting the document, before creating a new project in Studio.

Then open the document, immediately 'save target as' and if this saves, then you will be able to work with the file. If however there are issues, you will need to look again at the source file.

  • Hey Steven,

Thanks for the response. I removed the grey spaces between words and completely removed all formating. Unfortunately, this didn't resolve the problem. I still can't open the translated file. I get the same error message (attached). I tried opening it in other document editor (instead of OpenOffice) but no joy..still the same error message appears (attached).

Have you or anyone else had this problem of opening the target document?

Any advice or links to relevant troubleshooting articles would be much appreciated. Thanks.
