Exported XML to bilingual word segments, but segments are in the wrong sequence

Hi, i'm relatively new to Trados and received a project that requires me to translate a big XML file with 300 pages, 8 chapters in total. Given the client doesn't have Trados but would like to comment in Word format, we have agreed to export the file to bilingual segments in Word, and split between 2 translators to speed up the work. They will review our work by chapters and we will merge all the chapters together after the translations are finalized, and put it back to XML format.

Unfortunately, we found that some of the segments are not in the right order when we were asked to indicate the page number on the Word file (the reviewer wants to refer back to the PDF format for easy tracking)  I am about to turn down the page number request but also want to see if there is a better way to handle this. This is the only way I can think of in order to fulfill their requirements. (able to comment in Word, and keeping it in the same format and export back to XML)

Any suggestions are welcome and thanks in advance!

  • Hi Louis,

Not sure if you've had any feedback on your query, but if not, could you advise if you receive the xml file as one long stream, or is it sent as 8 x files i.e. one per chapter?

Also, when you say you have agreed to "export the file to bilingual segments in Word" is this using the MS Word based "bilingual review" app in Trados Studio, or are you creating this in a different way?

Any other info you can give on the process may also help with some alternative ideas/suggestions being put forward if you can share please.

    Look forward to hearing back.

    Phil.

  • You are not very detailled in your description on how you want to do all these file format conversions, but it looks like an extremely brittle process, to say the least.

Yes, you can translate in Trados, then export to bilingual Word file, and then a reviewer can CAREFULLY do smaller edits or use the Word comment function - this will be re-imported into Trados when you update from bilingual review.

You can not let translators do their translations in the Word file and then import. That is not what this function is for. And where does the PDF come in? I did not quite follow that. Also, how can an XML file have chapters? XML files have elements, not chapters.

How are you splitting this XML file?

    Daniel

PS: I hope that did not come across as too negative, I think you can do what you are aiming at, but I don't think your process will work.
