How to prevent the numbers in segments, which contain the name and number, from being placed from TM?

Dear users,

I wonder if there is a way that, if there is a segment in TM containing a name and number (e.g. Steel screw 2555485), when the same name appears in subsequent translations, but with a different number (e.g. Steel screw 15938), the translation memory does not substitute the number, but only the name, so that the number is copied from the source column?

I wonder if Trados may not take the numbers into account at all, so that the differences do not reduce the accuracy when substituting from memory:

Another example is when Trados substitutes the name with TM because the numbers match, but the name is wrong.

E.g.

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing a segment with a steel screw name and number being translated, with focus on the translation memory pane.

I'm working on projects that contain a lot of such names that differ only in numbers, maybe there is a way to do that?

Thank you in advance,
Natalia Rega

  • Dear Paul,

Thank you very much for your answer, but I think I expressed my question wrongly.

I work with files that contain lots of same names, but with different numbers (catalog number)
My point is, that in the segments like those:

Screenshot of Trados Studio segment comparison showing source text with catalog numbers and translated text with different names but same numbers.

The number was copied from the source (stay the same) but the names were translated from TM (e.g. vis >>> schroef).

Can such an effect be achieved?

Now TM often searches for a match by numbers and sets inaccurate hits (match 70%) where e.g. only one of the numbers matches and the name is completely wrong.
Or, as in the illustrated example, TM substitutes the same names with similar but different numbers.

Close-up of Trados Studio interface highlighting a segment with a catalog number and a translated name, indicating a match from translation memory.

I would be very grateful for any help.

    Many thanks,

    Natalia Rega.
