Studio 2021 and Word preview still doesn't work properly

I just installed Studio 2021 and was disappointed to discover that the persistent problems with the Word preview function still haven't been resolved. I'm running a properly installed and licensed version of Office 365. If I start the Word preview in Studio, it appears to work correctly at first, but I can see in the Task Manager that Studio starts another Word process every time I confirm a segment (see screenshot). This eventually gobbles up so much memory that it can lead to a complete system crash. Even exiting Studio doesn't kill these background processes, so I have to do it manually/run a kill-all script.

This problem has been reported in countless posts, and the fact that this still hasn't been dealt with after multiple major releases is frustrating. If the feature can't be implemented properly, it needs to be removed. Thank you.

  • I don't have the problems you do with the multiple instances of Word starting up... I think something else is at play there.  And the External preview does work for me except...

    1. it's a little slow... seems to lag a second before following me each time
    2. it doesn't follow me at all if I am confirming the segments as I go.  If follows if I just arrow down, but not when I confirm

So not too useful I think.  I also looked at the HTML which was instant however I got to the next segments or moved around the document, and a refresh (Ctrl+R) was similarly instant with your file.

I have logged this with support/development and will see what we think we can improve.  In the meantime looks like HTML is the way to go... will at least put it on a par with other tools that only use the HTML anyway.
