Hi all,
Someone has asked me this question. They'd like to be able to place a comment in the Source segment in order to point out a mistake to the client.
I can't think of a way to achieve this but wondered if anyone else knows of one?
Thanks!
Ali

Hi Ali,
I would also wish for that feature, but I don't think it is possible.

Hi Daniel, indeed it would be useful. As far as I'm aware, the only source comments that are possible are those that are imported from the source language file on project creation.
I'd imagine it would be pretty hard to program the ability to add source comments at this late stage in the development of the wonderful product that is SDL Trados Studio... also, I don't think many people have expressed a desire for it.
It is of course possible to copy and paste the source segment to a separate document to use later, or to add a comment to the target segment and export the comment to Excel as both source and target are quoted, as we currently do but it could save time if we could add a comment suggesting a correction to the source text, on the fly as we go through a file.
Thanks for commenting!
All the best,
Ali
Perhaps Alison Field this would be worth adding to the Ideas section.

Hi Steven,
Yes, but I thought I should check first to see if anyone knew of a way to do this...
Thanks,
Ali
You will have my vote...

Perhaps a couple of workarounds in the meantime ;-)
I must admit I'm not a fan of adding this capability to Studio unless it's a trivial task. But I guess adding the comments is one thing (which may not be trivial since Editor changes always seem to be tricky), but then making the Save Source pick up the comments and include them is another. But the ideas site is a good idea.

Hi Paul,
Adding a copy of the source file to the project with source copied to target... that's the best workaround yet ...
I suspect that exporting for bilingual review would not meet the need, as it's just the specific segments the client wanted to export and that can be achieved already via the Comment View Plugin export.
Thanks!

Hi again Paul Filkin
The person who I made this request for liked your idea no. 1...
A stroke of genius... I wish I'd thought of it
One could also copy source to target within the actual file then filter for the segment/s in question and export that to an SDLXLIFF via the Advanced display filter...
OR... one could even keep the incorrect text in the Source segment and the corrected text in Target with a comment then export that, filtering for comments...
