Translate
Hello,
I have a client that is asking me to translate a file and put EN only as language code for source language, not EN-US, or EN-GB, etc., but I have no idea how to do this. Does anyone know? Thanks.

Why don't you ask your client? If they instruct you so, they definitely know how to do that. It is ok that a client giving a task for you also explains how to achieve it.
You cannot do this with Trados. Trados always requires what we refer to as "fully qualified" languages. This means the "language-Location" every time.
I have a question though... what is just English for your client then? Also what difference does it make for them?

Yes, that is what I know also, but the client insists it is possible and that he has other translators that use Trados and do it. He means no variant specification.

If they use Trados the client is wrong.

It is a Word file as MemoQ file in fact, so I have to send it back in the same format. Apparently in MemoQ there is an option called English (source).

ok - so this explains a little better. The original source s Word, then it was converted to a memoQ XLIFF (which can use plain EN), and you have been sent the memoQ XLIFF?
In this case it's no problem. Trados will use a variant, but your finished translation, when you save the target will be a memoQ XLIFF and it will just be EN.
There is nothing to worry about here.

He does not know, his company does not use Trados. He just said some translarors do it, but after Paul's answer I think he was just confused how Trados works.
