Using Trados on dropbox on different computers

Hi,

I have Dropbox on both my desktop and laptop. I just installed Studio 2021 on both, and it seemed logical to move my translation memory and termbase to the dropbox folder, because I'll be able to sync them when working on different computers (*and also get that awesome backup just in case). However, since the path to Dropbox is inevitably different between the two computers, every time I switch computers I have to 'find' the files in their respective folders, which is not very practical. I tried to move my Dropbox to the root of C:, but it doesn't allow me (probably due to permissions). Does anyone have a similar problem? Any workarounds?

Just as a side note, the project files are not giving me any headache, Trados seems to find them automatically despite being in different paths on both pcs.

    I also use Dropbox on two computers and keep all my Studio resources in a local Dropbox folder. After getting a new laptop a few months ago, I was disappointed and frustrated to see that I couldn't easily move the Dropbox folder to replicate the path I use on my desktop computer. However, a little perseverance paid off and I managed to place the folder where I needed it, which means I can easily access my projects from either computer.

    The notes I kept in case I need to fix the problem again are:

    Error: Can't create Dropbox folder in selected location (C:\Users\MyName\Documents)

    Solution: In Windows Explorer, modify Security permissions for the Documents folder to allow "full access"

    I am new with Trados and I bought a Freelance Plus to be able to work on two computers. 

    I have set it up with Dropbox for now and because I work on Mac (using Parallels) then the path is the same. So until now no issues. 

    I thought of using Live, but it is still only in its baby-form with a lot of limitations, so I will try to get it to work this way. 

    Do you have any experiences that you like to share, so I dont have to suffer? ;-)

    Until now I have just been checking that the dropbox is completely synchronized on both computers before I open SDL on the new computer. 

    So I will be very happy to hear from you :-).

    welcome to the club :) I also have only a few months of experience, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Generally, the snag is when your TM or term base grows, it takes Dropbox more time to "hijack" the file to upload it to the cloud. If you hit Ctrl+S at that exact moment, Trados may crash. So that's the only caveat to using Dropbox for TM or TB storage. For now I moved those files locally, and I make a copy every weekend. For what it's worth, I have all the Dropbox files locally on both pcs + on the cloud.

    My only wish is that Trados would be updated to accommodate this new reality, as more and more people work this way. For example, whenever I use Word or a subtitling program with files in Dropbox, and this thing happens, there is only an error message to the effect of "I can't save the file". You wait for a couple of seconds and then you can save the file. If only Trados could do this, too...

  • Hi Jane. Thank you for welcoming me to the club ;-)

    As you know the Dropbox files are stored locally and then synchronize afterwards with the cloud, so I dont understand why there should be synchronizing problems? 

    So in that sense no files are online when connected to. 

    I have the business version of Dropbox. Which version do you use?

    I haven't experienced any problems so far, but I have only worked with it for a week or two. 

    I hope you understand my questions. English is not my native language ;-)

    Well, Dropbox checks for changes in files and updates them on regular basis. Those few seconds while it uploads the translation memory file, for example, the file is not available to Trados, and Trados crashes. I have the 2TB version of Dropbox, don't know what's it called. I also didn't have issues at the beginning, when the files were tiny, but when issues started to appear I changed my 'ritual'. See how it works for you after a few months.

    And as for Dropbox itself, there's an option to keep all files only in the cloud. I chose to keep a local copy for piece of mind. But I'm assuming the 'cloud only' option would be even worse.
