SP2 disallows locking/unlocking segments when Track Changes are ON

I've already logged this with SDL Support, but wanted to bring it up here.

Basically, Trados SP2 has a new *feature* which disables locking/unlocking segments when Track Changes are enabled.

I believe before you would get an error message when you tried locking a segment that included Track Changes,

so perhaps the developers thought this was an improvement to prevent errors.

However, if you need to lock/unlock segments and also make Track Changes in the same file,

you have to turn Track Changes ON/OFF multiple times which is tedious.

A better solution would be to disable locking segments only when there are track changes in the segment regardless of whether Track Changes are ON or OFF.

Anyways, my two cents.

Hi Jesse,

Maybe a quick hint that might be helpful is to use the sdlxliff toolkit from the SDL OpenExchange. This will allow you to lock/unlock many segments at once irrespective of whether track changes are on or not. Might be what you need?

Did not work for me, when I was a different user from those, who has locked the segments.
I need to check that again, but it seems as this behavior would have changed since SP2.

Let me first check, if it is still like that. I forgot to mention, that the segments were PerfectMatch and I created by me in a different role on a different PC. Then I took the file on another PC for review, where I have a different user name. On that PC we run only the freelance version of Studio. In this version unlocking was not possible. Also the Toolkit would not perform on that machine. If you're interested, we could use TeamViewer or GoToWebinar or similar to look in that files.

Easier if you can send me a file that has been through that process. Just make something up when you have time and run through the different steps to create a file like this. It's easier for me to play with it on my own computer as I know where everything is and how to use it.

Just to make sure my point was clear.

With track change turned on, the "Lock Segments" command is grayed out (Red boxes):

With the track changes off, the "Lock Segments" button is enabled (Red boxes):

Hi Jesse, this is understood. I gave you a workaround using the SDLXLIFF Toolkit because this is indeed not possible in the editor.

I see. While I use SDLXLIFF Toolkit almost everyday to lock and slice files, unfortunately it doesn't help for my use case. Basically for all translations we lock all 100%/CM matches in advance. However during review often times the checkers need to unlock segments to fix problems they find in the 100% matches. Since they are working in review mode, its tedious to have to switch track changes off and then on every time they need to just unlock a segment to fix something.

Anyways thanks for the help and feedback!

Hi Jesse, ok, I see the problem then. Maybe you can use Ctrl+Alt+F10 to quickly toggle the track changes, or even better string Ctrl+Alt+F10, Ctrl+L, together using AutoHotkey. Then it would one keyboard shortcut to achieve this.

Yep, those would be the "workarounds". It's a bit unfortunate though that in SP1 you could unlock/lock freely without worrying about having a workaround. Also, any idea the rationale behind the change in SP2? (Seems SDL could just revert back to the behavior in SP1...)

I'm not sure of the rationale (I have asked though), but maybe another solution is to turn off the setting that activates track changes by default?

Guess it all depends on what's worse. Turning on Track Changes when you want them, or turning them off when you don't!

I must confirm this ugly behavior even after CU8 - and this is a bug and not a feature, believe me! I have created a project, used PerfectMatch on that and locked the segments. Now the customer requests changes to the PM segments (he does not even know about PM, and the pretranslated files were not all mine, but this is a different part of the story). So I've opened for Sign-off to make sure, the autopropagation will work (as in other scenarios it will not overwrite Context Matches or reviewed segments) and now can't simply unlock segments, but need to toggle the track changes off. Why?

I found this thread after I came across this bug with SP2 CU10 and I was wondering if it has ever been fixed in Studio 2015. I don't recall any comment about this in the different release notes.

Hi all,

In my case I have an updated sdlxliff (from a bilingual table) and I cannot accept the changes on the locked segments, nor unlock those segments that contain tracked changes (even after disabling the tracked changes option), etc.

None of the previously mentioned tips work for me. What's the problem here? How can I solve this without using the sdlxliff toolkit that would unlock all segments (which is not what I want)?
