How to make Save Target As STICK on the ribbon?

I've had this problem before but through most of 2019 it seemed stable. Just upgraded to 2021 and yay, the problem is back. Not matter how many times I add the "Save target as" function to a custom tab/group, it never sticks. And no, it's not overloaded, I've only got 4 items on it.

Any idea what ails 2021 in this regard?

  • We tested quickly and this seems to work so a quick couple of things:

    1. can you share how you created the group... what it's called, what you have in it?
    2. can you confirm the "Save target as" is not missing because you don't have a document open in the editor?

  • 1. View > Ribbon Customization > New Tab (Feumail) > New Group (Feumail), I'm *trying* to have Save; Save Target As; Translate Single Doc; Options

    2. I know it has the annoying habit of appearing/disappearing depending on what I've got open, but that's not the issue I'm reporting on. Between documents and between Studio sessions, with the same type of document open (docx for trans) it routinely does not appear and when I go to the Custom Group, it has disappeared from the 4 items I added i.e. it's not even just unticking itself, it's REMOVING itself.

I don't know if this is related or not but there seems to be a new thing called Advanved that keeps getting in the way. First it appeared, I went to Ribbon Cust to untick it. Next session, it was back. Then tried moving it to the bottom. Next session, it re-inserted itself at the far left of the ribbon. I had to move my custom tab to the top, Advanced to the bottom, close, then re-open Customization and untick Advanced to make it stay away (at least for now).

Some dev is trying to be way too clever with the ribbon and is creating too many responsive auto-actions when the thing should ideally just be static based on the users selections. Even if it worked, items on the ribbon appearing and disappearing "depending on" is annoying because when the icons shift, you end up clicking on the wrong thing because what you meant to click on has shifted because something else has temporarily disappeared.

  • Interesting choice of names...

So, I set my Studio up in this way and everything is there as long as I have the file open in the Editor.  I'll run with this for a while and see whether it stays put or not.

    You mean here?

Or you mean it gets added to your ribbon?  A picture paints a thousand words!

  • I had to call it something ;)

Here it is having just been re-added as since I last shut down Studio, it didn't like the scenery and went walkabout:

Indeed... it was the Gaelic that surprised me.

Sorry Michael... I am a bit confused here.  Are you trying to show that you have removed the Advanced tab?  Or something else?

  • I must have mis-interpreted what you wanted a screenshot of. But yes, the problem was that Advanced kept re-inserting itself between File and Home, even though I'd unticked it, then I tried moving down and unticking.

I may have been able to fix this but it would be nice if this could be fixed within the product... I found an old sheet of notes I made for moving Studio and it mentions that ribbon changes don't seem to stick unless I make them while there's a file open for translation, i.e. if I just fire up Studio and make changes to the ribbon, they don't stick but if I open Studio, open a file for translation, save that as a project (keeping the file open) and THEN make ribbon changes, it seems more amenable to remembering my settings. For now, that seems to be working, touch wood...

Which would be, ummm, a nuts path that a user has to take?
