Firstly, welcome to the SDL family

Thankfully we are very rich in our file type support, regardless its default or custom requirements.

Resolution: we need to add *.xlf as a recognised file type & typically this is done via File - Options - File Types

Don't understand though. If I go to File - Options - File Types, I see a list of file types. These include XLIFF with the file extension *.xlf. This is checked (like all the file types on the list). But if I attempt to "Create New Project" the file doesn't show up on the Files in Selected Folder. I can do "Translate as Single Document", but not "Create New Project".

I had already seen the thread but that shed no light on the matter. If I seem to be missing something, please remember, I'm a translator, not a computer technician.

Oh yes I took a few factors for granted given you have just started, so do allow for me to go into some detail

SDL Trados Studio has the ability to work based on 2 concepts:

1. Default settings which is where I suggested you start (File - Options)
2. Project settings

Initially project settings are based on your default settings. But over time you may end up having "project specific settings" (managed through templates). 

Purely for information purposes, please see where I highlighted in amber where you confirm  which setting are you using for your project. 

Regardless of what you see, it’s clear your project settings are not supporting your document.

Please see if any of the 3 work for you:

1. If you see no files listed, try add them manually by clicking on the add file icon

2. If the file in quested is listed but with a usage marked as Reference, see if you can access a drop down change the files usage to “Translatable”

      3. Alternatively review the "Project File Type Settings" which takes you into views you are already familiar with. Difference being they are specific to this “Project”.
      Check to ensure your *.xlf is listed. 

If any of the 3 work, then please may I recommend you save your efforts to ease future project creation. You do this once your project has been created successfully by either updating the “Project Setting Template” or creating a new Project Template, which you can then reference next time you initiate a project (as seen in amber box)

Is this the area Files in Selected Folder you mentioned in the Create New Project wizard?

Of course, you first need to drop the files there from your File Explorer. You should see them right away in the right pane if you drop one or several files.

But if you instead drop a folder, you'll will need an extra step: clicking on the right arrow on the left pane, and then select the folder. Actually you can see in the screen-shot that there are 3 files in a folder.

That works. 

I haven't seen the option of dragging the file to the Project Files pane in any of the tutorials. Since this isn't necessary with a .doc file — it automatically shows up in the "Files in Selected Folder" pane after you drag it to the Welcome window — I didn't realize you'd need to do it with other kinds of files.

That works.
