Contents segment disappear when using shortcut keys

Since a few days, I have a really weird error in Studio. When I'm working in a segment and want to use copy/paste, I can't use the shortcut keys Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, because then the entire target segment gets emptied and the little symbol (the pencil) gets reverted to the little blank page that you usually only see when you haven't done anything in a segment yet. Using ctrl+Z to restore the content of the segment doesn't work.
More annoyingly, this also sometimes (and randomly) happens when I confirm a segment with Ctrl+Enter. So I press Ctrl+Enter, and the contents of the target segment disappear, the little pencil symbol reverts to the blank page symbol and I can't get anything back by using Ctrl+Z. Sometimes Studio also freezes at this point, and I have to exit the program and start it back up again to be able to continue working.

How can I solve this? I have already tried restarting my computer and removing and reinstalling Studio, none of which helped. I am using Studio 2021.

  • Hi Paul, I'm not running anything else at the same time. It all worked fine until Thursday (11 Feb) last week and I haven't changed anything. I didn't install/uninstall anything (apart from reinstalling Studio when the problem first occurred), and my keyboard and shortcut keys work fine in any other application. It is only Studio that this happens in.

I found someone having a similar issue on here but they ran an MT plugin, which I'm also not using. The problem first occurred in a Trados Groupshare project. I tried to see if it made any difference when I worked in a project I made myself on my own computer, but the problems also occurred in my own local project. It is definitely something in Studio.

I'm afraid it really isn't.  But if you think it is then do a completely clean reinstall and try again.

    Clean install... try the following.

    1. Uninstall Studio
    2. Uninstall MultiTerm

Now manually delete these folders if they are still there (back up your TMs, Termbases, AutoSuggest Dictionaries and Projects first in case you make a mistake):

    c:\ProgramData\Package Cache\SDL\SDLTradosStudio2021\
    c:\ProgramData\Package Cache\SDL\SDLMultiTermDesktop2021\
    c:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio16\
    c:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL MultiTerm\MultiTerm16\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\16\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio16\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL MultiTerm\MultiTerm16\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\16\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio16\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL MultiTerm\MultiTerm16\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2021\Project Templates\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2021\Projects\projects.xml

I think that's about it for a clean install. Then reinstall.

All your projects will be gone from the list, but they won't be removed from your disk.  So you'll just have to use Open Project and navigate to them in order to put them back.  If you don't wish to lose your projects list then don't delete this:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2021\Projects\projects.xml

If it isn't, then why did I have no problems at all in any other application, like MemoQ and Word?

Anyway, the clean install seems to have cured the problem. Thanks for your help!

That doesn't really follow... but glad the reset sorted you out.
