Converting tags in source document into translatable text

Hello everyone,

I am a new user of SDL Trados and I have a basic understanding of how it works, but I am experiencing some difficulties in handling tags contained in the source document that I am translating.

My source document is a Word file with text and also a few images with figures/tables. These figures/tables are mentioned throughout the text. I've noticed that every time the name of a figure/table appears in the source document, Trados has created a tag for it. So, for instance, when the text reads "As figure X shows", "figure X" corresponds to a tag.

Since I need to translate the word "figure" in the target document, I was wondering if there is any way I can get SLD Trados to extract the translatable text from the tag. Otherwise I keep getting error messages for those segments, because SDL Trados assumes that the tag is missing when I have simply translated the original words into the target language.

It might be relevant to mention that I have already started to translate the text, so I am looking for a solution that doesn't involve losing the segments that were already translated.

Could you provide any advice and point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance!

  • You should not delete these tags.

For the text "Figure" the translation can be available in Studio or you will simply need to adapt that in the final Word file. It is not complicated and does need to be done only once, all figures will then be updated. This tags are—as Paul already pointed out—a result of fields in Word. This tags can also refer to the complete picture descriptions, so it is also advisable to formulate sentences accordingly. These descriptions will then be quoted in the final document in the same form as they are written at the pictures. If your grammar would typically need to modify these (in Polish this would be the case), you neeed to adapt the sentence to let it refer to unmodified text.
