Translating in Trados and proofreading it in memoQ

Hello everybody,

I'm on a project with several translators/proofreaders and sometimes we don't work with the same CAT tool. I found some links (here and there) explaining how to work with .sdlxliff files in memoQ, but could you please tell me if there is any issue in doing distinct steps of the process in different CAT tools?

For example, if my colleague proofreads a file (which I translated in Trados 2021) in memoQ, will I be able to see the changes they made proofreading like I do in Trados (translation) > Trados (review) processes, so I can track the changes and update them into my TM in Trados?

Thanks and best regards,

I'm going to say no to this.  In memoQ if I do this with an sdlxliff:

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing an error message indicating missing origin information for a translation imported from memoQ.

I see this when I export the file back to Studio:

Screenshot of Trados Studio displaying a bilingual file with track changes not persisted from memoQ, showing the source and target segments side by side.

Without going into too much detail you can see memoQ doesn't now where the translation came from (Origin info is missing), and the track changes made in memoQ are not persisted into the sdlxliff.  Probably other things too... but in general if you want to retain support properly for things like this then you need to work with one tool... either just Trados Studio, or just memoQ.  Or use another plugin such as post-edit compare.  This would at least allow you to create a report showing the changes between the files before adding to memoQ and then after updating from memoQ.  It would just be a manual task to compare with the report as you work through the file.

  • Hey Paul,

That's perfect. Thanks a lot for taking your time to tell me how the process happens in details. Now it's clear for me what I can expect if we try it down the road.

I'll probably give it a try. Besides asking for the proofread file, maybe I'll also ask my colleague to share a spreadsheet/screenshot of the modified segments (if memoQ also has it).

Thanks again and have a nice weekend!

    Cheers
