As far as the TM is concerned these are exactly the same as it's a recognised acronym.  If you look at the actual segment in the editor it probably has a blue line under it.

Aha, thanks.  So I've now worked out how to turn this off.

And it's recommending me to re-index the TM.

... but I'm most definitely not using this "uplift" stuff. Is this relevant?

I presume re-indexing won't have that much effect since it's just "false acronyms" involved... but could you point me to the right page to do this (if the above isn't it)?

Yes, after removing Acronyms as a recognized item in your TM, you need to re-index that TM, otherwise those acronyms will be underlined with the blue line and replaced automatically in the Editor.

You can re-index the TM in several ways. One of them would be, navigate to Project Settings > Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Translation Memory and Automated Translation, then select your TM, press Settings button > Performance and Tuning, and press the Re-index button.

After re-indexing you won't see those blue underlines
